SUMMARY:African American Museum in Philadelphia
DESCRIPTION:Sailing to Freedom: Maritime Dimensions of the Underground Railroad \nOn View: September 13\, 2025 – April 26\, 2026 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJack T. Franklin Auditorium \nAAMP is pleased to present Sailing to Freedom: Maritime Dimensions of the Underground Railroad\, a compelling traveling exhibition developed initially at the New Bedford Whaling Museum in 2022 under the co-curation of Dr. Timothy Walker and Michael Dyer. \nThis landmark project invites audiences to revisit and deepen our understanding of the maritime dimension of the Underground Railroad. It uncovers how enslaved African Americans\, in addition to overland routes\, undertook daring escapes by sea—charting covert paths along the Atlantic coast\, aboard merchant and passenger vessels\, and via lesser-known watercraft.\n\nThis traveling version of the exhibition presents faithful reproductions of the original displays\, alongside new interpretive material that expands both geographical scope and historical insight. It offers visitors an immersive encounter with narratives of flight\, resilience\, and agency—stories of freedom pursued not only across land but over water\, and beyond the bounds of the United States. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDetails – visit the museum’s website click here\n\n\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Black Philadelphia 250 Zion Baptist Church
DESCRIPTION:Zion Baptist Church was established as a late 19th-century community of faith. The leading exponent in this ecclesiastical establishment was Rev. Horace Wayland\, a black Virginia preacher\, no doubt a former slave. \nRev. Wayland established Zion as a missionary prayer meeting in 1882 in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Lewis Simms. In 1883\, Reverend Wayland was ordained and the prayer meetings moved to a hill at 13th and Popular Streets. The membership grew\, causing a number of relocations\, which finally settled at 13th & Wallace Streets. This last relocation was an awesome purchase of $16\,000 and typically Zion took on the challenge. By the time of Reverend Wayland’s homegoing in 1896\, the debt had been reduced to $6000. This was a remarkable feat for this dynamic minister and his progressive congregation. \nZion Baptist Church\n3600 North Broad Street\nPhiladelphia\, PA 19140 \nPosters 11″ x 17″\, 13″ x 19″ and 8.5″ x 11″\nGreeting cards folded w/envelopes \n \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Black Philly 250 Event - Chad Cortez Everett
DESCRIPTION:An Artist’s Journey toward Mastery \nGroup Exhibition | February 5 – February 26\, 2026\nI am honored to be included in the group exhibition An Artist’s Journey toward Mastery at the Chester County Art Association in West Chester\, Pennsylvania. This exhibition marks a significant milestone in my artistic journey and signals the beginning of new creative opportunities in 2026. \nI am grateful to be exhibiting alongside two legendary artists\, Dane Tilghman and Jose Sebourn\, whose contributions to contemporary art and education have been deeply influential. \nFor this exhibition\, I will present both new and past works from my ongoing collection\, Jawnism.\nJawnism is my personal visual language—an autobiographical approach to painting and collage rooted in memory\, place\, and lived experience. Drawing from my childhood and adult life in Philadelphia\, Jawnism explores themes of nostalgia\, resilience\, family\, and cultural identity. Through figurative storytelling\, bold color\, and the use of found materials such as vintage ephemera and layered imagery\, my work bridges past and present\, honoring everyday moments that often go unnoticed but carry deep emotional weight. \nEach piece functions as a visual archive—capturing moments\, rituals\, and environments that have shaped my identity as an artist\, educator\, and individual. \nExhibition Details\nOn View: February 5 – February 26\, 2026 \nLocation:\nThe Chester County Art Association\n100 North Bradford Avenue\nWest Chester\, PA 19382\n610-696-5600 \nArtists’ Reception:\nThe Huston Gallery\nFebruary 5\, 2026\n5:00 – 7:00 PM\n(I will be present at the reception.) \nGallery Hours:\nTuesday–Friday\, 12:00 – 6:00 PM \nMore information can be found here:\nhttps://www.chestercountyarts.org/west-chester-galleries.html \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n Like this:Like Loading...
