SUMMARY:African American Museum in Philadelphia
DESCRIPTION:Sailing to Freedom: Maritime Dimensions of the Underground Railroad \nOn View: September 13\, 2025 – April 26\, 2026 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJack T. Franklin Auditorium \nAAMP is pleased to present Sailing to Freedom: Maritime Dimensions of the Underground Railroad\, a compelling traveling exhibition developed initially at the New Bedford Whaling Museum in 2022 under the co-curation of Dr. Timothy Walker and Michael Dyer. \nThis landmark project invites audiences to revisit and deepen our understanding of the maritime dimension of the Underground Railroad. It uncovers how enslaved African Americans\, in addition to overland routes\, undertook daring escapes by sea—charting covert paths along the Atlantic coast\, aboard merchant and passenger vessels\, and via lesser-known watercraft.\n\nThis traveling version of the exhibition presents faithful reproductions of the original displays\, alongside new interpretive material that expands both geographical scope and historical insight. It offers visitors an immersive encounter with narratives of flight\, resilience\, and agency—stories of freedom pursued not only across land but over water\, and beyond the bounds of the United States. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDetails – visit the museum’s website click here\n\n\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Black Philadelphia 250 Zion Baptist Church
DESCRIPTION:Zion Baptist Church was established as a late 19th-century community of faith. The leading exponent in this ecclesiastical establishment was Rev. Horace Wayland\, a black Virginia preacher\, no doubt a former slave. \nRev. Wayland established Zion as a missionary prayer meeting in 1882 in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Lewis Simms. In 1883\, Reverend Wayland was ordained and the prayer meetings moved to a hill at 13th and Popular Streets. The membership grew\, causing a number of relocations\, which finally settled at 13th & Wallace Streets. This last relocation was an awesome purchase of $16\,000 and typically Zion took on the challenge. By the time of Reverend Wayland’s homegoing in 1896\, the debt had been reduced to $6000. This was a remarkable feat for this dynamic minister and his progressive congregation. \nZion Baptist Church\n3600 North Broad Street\nPhiladelphia\, PA 19140 \nPosters 11″ x 17″\, 13″ x 19″ and 8.5″ x 11″\nGreeting cards folded w/envelopes \n \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Uncle Bobbie's X Clay Cane: Burn Down Master's House Book Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join Uncle Bobbie’s as we welcome back New York Times Bestselling author\, Clay Cane for the release of his debut novel.\n\n\nRemembering is an act of Resistance… \nJoin us as we welcome the host of the Clay Cane Show on Sirius XM and New York Times bestselling author\, Clay Cane for the release of his debut novel\, Burn Down Master’s House. \nClay will be in conversation with fellow SiriusXM radio host\, Reecie Colbert. \nYou’ve heard Clay before\, but not like this! \nAll tickets will come with a signed copy of Burn Down Master’s House. \nDon’t miss this amazing event! \n—– \nAbout the author: \nClay Cane is a New York Times bestselling author and award-winning journalist\, radio host\, and political analyst\, and the host of The Clay Cane Show on SiriusXM. His commentary is heard on television networks such as ABC\, MSNBC\, FOX\, and CNN\, and his work has been featured in The Washington Post\, CNN.com\, and BET. He is the author of the instant New York Times bestseller The Grift: The Downward Spiral of Black Republicans from the Party of Lincoln to the Cult\, as well as Live Through This and Burn Down Master’s House. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Rutgers University with a B.A. in English and African American Studies\, he is originally from Philadelphia and can be found online at clay-cane.com. \n  \nAbout the book: \nInspired by true\, long-buried stories of enslaved people who dared to fight back\, a searing portrayal of resistance for readers of Colson Whitehead\, Jesmyn Ward\, and Percival Everett\, from Clay Cane\, award-winning journalist and New York Times bestselling author of The Grift. \nAs turmoil simmers within a divided nation\, smoke from another blaze begins to rise. Sparked by individual acts of resistance among those enslaved across the American South\, their seemingly disparate rebellions fuel a singular inferno of justice\, connecting them in ways quiet at times\, explosive at others. As these flames rise\, so will they. \nLuke\, quick-witted and literate\, and Henri\, a man with a strong and defiant spirit\, forge an unbreakable bond at a Virginia plantation called Magnolia Row. Both seek escape from unimaginable cruelty. And sure as the fires of hell\, Luke and Henri will leave their mark\, sparking resistance among the lives they touch… \nOne is Josephine\, a young\, sharp\, and observant girl who wields silence as her greatest weapon. A witness to Luke and Henri’s resilience\, she listens\, watches\, waits for the moment to make her move. \nThen there is Charity Butler\, her husband a formerly enslaved man who proved his ferocity as a young boy standing alongside Josephine. At his encouragement\, Charity fights for her freedom in court and wins – only to battle a deeply unjust system designed to destroy the life they’ve built. \nAnd finally\, there is Nathaniel\, who ruthlessly exploits other Black people and mirrors the cruelty of the white men who\, like him\, are enslavers. A perversion of the system of slavery\, his fragile and contradictory rule will become a catalyst of its own. \nInspired by the true stories of the profoundly courageous men and women who dared to fight back\, Burn Down Master’s House is a singular tour de force of a novel—breathtaking in scope\, compassion\, and a timeliness that speaks powerfully to our present era. \n… \nDoors open at 6:30pm. \nStreet parking available. Wheelchair accessible entrance available. \nA ll ticket sales are final and non-refundable. \nBags larger than a handbag will not be permitted \n\n\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Black Philly 250 Event - Chad Cortez Everett
DESCRIPTION:An Artist’s Journey toward Mastery \nGroup Exhibition | February 5 – February 26\, 2026\nI am honored to be included in the group exhibition An Artist’s Journey toward Mastery at the Chester County Art Association in West Chester\, Pennsylvania. This exhibition marks a significant milestone in my artistic journey and signals the beginning of new creative opportunities in 2026. \nI am grateful to be exhibiting alongside two legendary artists\, Dane Tilghman and Jose Sebourn\, whose contributions to contemporary art and education have been deeply influential. \nFor this exhibition\, I will present both new and past works from my ongoing collection\, Jawnism.\nJawnism is my personal visual language—an autobiographical approach to painting and collage rooted in memory\, place\, and lived experience. Drawing from my childhood and adult life in Philadelphia\, Jawnism explores themes of nostalgia\, resilience\, family\, and cultural identity. Through figurative storytelling\, bold color\, and the use of found materials such as vintage ephemera and layered imagery\, my work bridges past and present\, honoring everyday moments that often go unnoticed but carry deep emotional weight. \nEach piece functions as a visual archive—capturing moments\, rituals\, and environments that have shaped my identity as an artist\, educator\, and individual. \nExhibition Details\nOn View: February 5 – February 26\, 2026 \nLocation:\nThe Chester County Art Association\n100 North Bradford Avenue\nWest Chester\, PA 19382\n610-696-5600 \nArtists’ Reception:\nThe Huston Gallery\nFebruary 5\, 2026\n5:00 – 7:00 PM\n(I will be present at the reception.) \nGallery Hours:\nTuesday–Friday\, 12:00 – 6:00 PM \nMore information can be found here:\nhttps://www.chestercountyarts.org/west-chester-galleries.html \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Cathay Williams: Female Buffalo Soldier
DESCRIPTION:Join Neumann’s Cultural Arts Forum for a historical impersonation of Cathay Williams\, a female Buffalo soldier\, by Dr. Daisy Century!\n\n\nJoin us on Thursday\, February 5\, 2026\, at 1:30 p.m. for Cathay Williams: Female Buffalo Soldier with historical impersonator\, Dr. Daisy Century. The event will be held in the Fred P. Meagher Theatre\, located in the Thomas A. Bruder\, Jr. Life Center at Neumann University. This is the fifth of eight lectures in the Cultural Arts Forum 2025-2026 Seminar Series. The Life Center and Theatre are both handicapped accessible. \nAdmission for every lecture is $10. All lectures are free to Cultural Arts Forum members and Neumann faculty\, staff\, and students.  \nBecome a CAF member for the year for only $45! Register online here: CAF Membership \nBack by popular demand\, Dr. Century will portray Cathay Williams. Despite the prohibition against women serving in the military\, Williams enlisted in the U.S. Regular Army under the false name of “William Cathay” on November 15\, 1866. She enlisted for a three-year engagement\, passing herself off as a man. Williams was assigned to the 38th U.S. Infantry Regiment after she passed the cursory medical examination. SUMMARY:The African Influence on American Food
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore the history of how African dishes has influenced the modern American dishes we know today!\n\n\nLong time Philly activist and chef Valerie Erwin will present on the history of African dishes in America. This story is more nuanced\, and more important than the simple “soul food” narrative that is often bandied about. \nIt’s the story of keeping some dishes virtually unchanged from the continent to the cruel new world; of adapting some dishes to accommodate new ingredients and circumstances; of inventing some dishes wholesale in the Americas. Valerie’s presentation will weave these threads together. \n\n\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n Like this:Like Loading...
