Carter presents “Afrofuturism in Costume Design\,” the Exhibition. \nIn 2019\, audiences sitting in the Dolby Theater and watching around the world on television\, stood up and roared with joy when Ruth Carter’s name was announced as the winner of the Oscar in Costume Design and\, again\, in 2023. \nThis touring costume exhibition showcases the story of Ruth E. Carter’s journey as an artist and storyteller\, who found a home and passion in Costume Design as she adventured from her humble beginnings in Springfield\, Massachusetts to the legendary Dolby Stage in Hollywood\, California\, to becoming a two-time Oscar® Winning Costume Designer. \nCarter’s filmography and costume design uniquely capture the African-American narrative and leave their mark in cinematic history. The modular exhibition features costumes and artifacts from Carter’s storied career and are displayed in settings infused by Carter’s own artistry including interactive elements and a showcase of costumes from Carter’s private collection. As guests tour the exhibit space\, they will be able to see rare\, hand-drawn images of legendary film characters and experience a behind the scenes look into Ruth’s research\, design\, and production process which will inspire the creative story-teller within. \nThe creative exhibition showcases: \n\naward-winning work;\npersonal sketches;\niconic celebrated costumes;\ndesign process that goes into creating costumes that connect actor with character;\nfilmmaking and production collaborations that bring the Afro-futuristic costumes to life; and\nimpactful contributions to film\, television\, and pop culture.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDetails – visit the museum’s website click here \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Black Art Lectures & Seminars
DESCRIPTION:October Gallery Lecture Series and Seminars.\nReserve your spot on Eventebrite – click here \nEvery Saturday and Sunday from November 8\, 2025\, through December 7\, 2025\, from 2 to 6 PM. \nEach weekend classes will cover: \n“The Art of Photography” with renown photographer Raymond W. Holman\, Jr.\n“Collecting Black Art” lead by African Art Distributor/Collector Michael Muhammad\n“Print Making” with famous visual artist Andromeda Cook \nHere is a sample of what will be covered in the “Collecting Black Art” class: \nCollecting Black Art by Michael Muhammad\nNov 03\, 2025 \nCollecting Black art is a meaningful practice that blends cultural preservation\, historical documentation\, aesthetic appreciation\, and social justice. It goes beyond acquiring objects for personal enjoyment or investment; it is a deliberate engagement with the visual expressions of Black identity\, experience\, and imagination. \nHistorically\, Black artists have been excluded from mainstream art institutions. Museums and galleries have often marginalized their contributions\, resulting in limited visibility and representation. In response\, private collectors—especially within the Black community—have played a vital role in preserving and promoting Black visual culture. Their efforts have helped elevate artists such as Romare Bearden\, Faith Ringgold\, and Jacob Lawrence\, whose work now occupies a more prominent place in the cultural canon. \nCollecting Black art is also an act of intellectual and cultural stewardship. Each artwork carries layers of meaning—historical\, political\, spiritual\, and emotional. Collectors who engage deeply with these works contribute to a broader understanding of Black cultural production. They research provenance\, contextualize pieces within historical frameworks\, and share knowledge through exhibitions\, publications\, and educational programming. This stewardship extends beyond ownership; it involves advocacy for artists\, support for emerging voices\, and collaboration with institutions to ensure that Black art is accessible to diverse audiences. \nThe social impact of collecting Black art is profound. Art shapes perceptions\, fosters empathy\, and inspires change. By investing in Black artists\, collectors challenge systemic inequities in the art market and affirm the value of Black creativity. This support can be transformative\, providing artists with financial stability\, visibility\, and opportunities for growth. Moreover\, collecting Black art affirms representation. When Black art is collected\, exhibited\, and celebrated\, it sends a powerful message about whose stories are worthy of preservation. It affirms that Black lives\, histories\, and aesthetics are central to the cultural landscape. \nBlack art is not monolithic. It encompasses a wide range of styles\, mediums\, and themes—from figurative painting and abstract sculpture to digital installations and textile work. Collectors who embrace this diversity help dismantle reductive stereotypes and showcase the complexity of Black artistic expression. Themes explored in Black art include identity and ancestry\, resistance and resilience\, spirituality and ritual\, and joy and everyday life. Works that trace lineage and explore heritage offer insight into the multifaceted nature of Black identity. Art that responds to social injustice and honors survival serves as a visual record of resistance. Pieces that engage with African cosmologies and sacred practices highlight the spiritual dimensions of Black life. Depictions of leisure\, love\, and community affirm the beauty of ordinary moments. \nWhile private collections are important\, collaboration with public institutions is essential for broader impact. Museums and universities benefit from partnerships with collectors who lend or donate works\, co-curate exhibitions\, and support educational initiatives. These collaborations help democratize access to Black art and ensure it reaches audiences beyond elite circles. Collectors also influence institutional priorities by advocating for the inclusion of Black artists in permanent collections and exhibitions. \nThe art market presents both opportunities and challenges. Recent interest in Black artists has led to higher valuations and greater visibility but also raises concerns about commodification and speculative buying. Ethical collectors approach the market with care\, prioritizing relationships with artists and respecting cultural contexts. They understand that collecting is not just about acquisition—it is about responsibility. \nThe future of Black art collecting lies in intentionality\, inclusivity\, and innovation. Emerging collectors are using digital platforms to discover artists\, share collections\, and build communities. Trends include digital archiving\, community-based collecting\, youth engagement\, and collective ownership. These approaches reflect a shift from individual possession to communal impact. \nIn conclusion\, collecting Black art is a dynamic and meaningful practice that honors creativity\, affirms representation\, and contributes to a more just and vibrant cultural landscape. It is a testament to the enduring power of art to reflect\, challenge\, and transform the world. \nBooks that will be available during the seminars: \n \n \n \n\nCollecting Black Art video – click here\n. \n \n  \n  \n  \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n Like this:Like Loading...

Send your question here and you might have a chance to hear her answer your question live on stage! \nAll copies of A Dream Deferred will be signed. \nYou don’t want to miss this! \n****** \nAbout the Book: \nFrom CNN’s Abby Phillip\, a triumphant new look at Jesse Jackson’s presidential campaigns of the 1980s and how they changed Black political power \n“A joyful\, rich\, must-read biography of a politician whose flaws and gifts were in constant\, intense competition.” —Jake Tapper \nJesse Jackson\, the civil rights leader\, activist\, raconteur\, and political candidate\, finally gets a book worthy of his stature courtesy of CNN anchor Abby Phillip. \nFocusing on his presidential runs in 1984 and\, especially\, 1988\, Phillip highlights how Jackson built an unlikely coalition that showed how Black political power could be consolidated. His experience working under Martin Luther King; his organizing the SLCC’s Operation Breadbasket in Chicago and beyond; and his roots in the deep South combined into two astonishingly impactful presidential campaigns. Appealing to the working people of urban enclaves like that of Chicago\, young people on college campuses\, and Black people across the South\, he created the modern Democratic coalition—one that has been used by all major Democrats seeking national success from Obama to Biden to Harris. \nWith her expert reporting\, natural storytelling skills\, and a story so full of humanity\, politics\, and hope\, Abby Phillip has written a rousing popular history that sheds new light on an American icon. \n \nAbout the Author: \nAbby Phillip anchors NewsNight with Abby Phillip on CNN. She’s also worked at The Washington Post\, ABC News\, and Politico. Throughout her career she has covered multiple presidents\, campaign finance\, lobbying and several presidential campaigns. During his remarkable life\, he embodies bold and compassionate leadership and achieved a level of influence few thought possible for a Black man born in Atlanta just before the Great Depression. \nNow\, aspiring leaders can reflect on some of Dr. King’s most impactful speeches and integrate his lessons into their modern leadership journeys. Robert F. Smith\, Founder\, Chairman and CEO of Vista Equity Partners\, offers his own insights and experiences on each passage on how themes like “The Beloved Community”\, “Economic Justice”\, and “Two Americas” played a central role in his own leadership development and why the visionary ideas of Dr. King espoused are so important for leaders to understand and apply today. \n \nAbout the author: \nRobert F. Smith is an American investor\, philanthropist and entrepreneur. He leads Vista Equity Partners\, a global technology investor that specializes in enterprise software. \nThroughout his life\, Smith’s commitments to philanthropy and equality of opportunity have never wavered\, and finding ways to make a difference in the communities where he lives and works is central to his character and approach to life. During his 2019 commencement address at Morehouse College\, a Historically Black College\, Smith committed to eliminating the student loan debt of the graduating class and later expanded his gift to eliminate student loan debt held by the students’ guardians on their behalf. Smith holds many board positions – he is the Chairman of Carnegie Hall and Student Freedom Initiative (SFI)\, co-lead of Southern Communities Initiative (SCI) and the founding director and President of Fund II Foundation. In addition\, he is a major donor to the National Museum of African American History and Culture\, the King Center\, his alma maters\, Cornell University and Columbia University\, and the Sphinx Organization\, among many others. Smith was honored by being listed as one of Forbes’ 100 Greatest Living Business Minds in 2017 and TIME100’s “Most Influential People” in 2020. \n \n****** \nKey Details \nDoors will open at 6:00pm \nSeating will be on a first come\, first serve basis.
