Started in 2004, the Spelman College Leadership and Women of Color Conference provides a professional development opportunity for women aspiring to be leaders as well as those who are in leadership positions in their organizations. The conference delivers critical research findings and practical perspectives for creating and sustaining leadership and a nurturing environment for women of color, at various stages in their career, to have open dialogue about leadership without being vulnerable.

The two-day event brings together an intergenerational group of leaders to share skills and knowledge to help women succeed in leadership roles.  Participants examine relevant research, attend information-packed workshops, participate in valuable networking opportunities, and interact with a wide range of diverse speakers about what it takes to create and sustain quality leadership. In 2012, attendees learned to “Lead with Purpose” by acting intentionally; aligning their values and goals; and integrating their varied roles and personal and professional priorities to provide a strong foundation for leadership. Previous speakers include Carol’s Daughter Founder Lisa Price, journalist Roland S. Martin, corporate executive Kimberly Davis, media expert Arianna Huffington and White House director Kiran Ahuja.

Following the conference, attendees have stated that they return to their organizations with elevated confidence and openness, applying the knowledge gained to their own professional development and committing to a plan of action to further excel in their organizations.

“I found the insights and skills gained to be relevant and timely, and the connections made have inspired me to return home with renewed purpose.”

“Thank you for coordinating this engaging, enlightening and highly educational event. I’ve gained invaluable insights that I can leverage immediately to impact my career.”
