Born in Brooklyn, New York, David J. Lawrence is a recipient of the prestigious “Creative Arts Award” of New York.  This renowned artist believes that “the sign of a genuine work of Art is that it can stir our unconscious feelings and past emotional experiences, while also inspiring self-awareness and cultural integrity”.

By virtue of this definition, David has blessed us with an enormous array of “genuine works of Arts”.  David is recognized as a major contributor to the art of the 20th century because of the brilliant manner in which he visualizes his objects and scenes.

David has had a life long ambition to be a professional artist. He has achieved this goal in such a manner that he has launched a national and international market for his originals and reproductions.

Talent, coupled with an academic journey to refine his gift, has resulted in David’s name being mentioned as one of the most influential artist of our time.  This quintessential American artist trained at the High School of Art and Design, and the prestigious Art Students League of New York, where fellow alumni include Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Norman Rockwell, and Georgia O’Keefe.  He also attended Long IslandUniversity, studying professional art and illustration.

He regards works done by legendary collagist, Romare Bearden, and European masters Pablo Picasso, Braque, andHenry Matisse that has helped to inspire the unique style used in his paintings.  David works in many mediums such as Airbrush, oils, and Acrylics that bring together a collage of techniques and integrating them into styles such as:  Abstract, Cubism, Figurative, and Futurism.  His recent series of works combines the Sciences of Astronomy, Numerology, Geometry, and Physics with the imagery, symbology, textures, and patterns of Indigenous cultures in his own unique style “Pyramidism”.

The context of the multicultural contemporary art created by Mr. Lawrence is based on spiritual and cultural motifs within the ancient cultures around the world.  To assist in this effort, David collects African Sculpture and other African artifacts.  The African artifacts he chooses are the tools and references, which reflect the art form, used in many of his dynamic paintings.  He states,“Utilizing historical African Art as a reference guide helps to enhance my knowledge of traditional art and gives me a better understanding of cultural history, which allows me to teach others through my paintings”.

David’s work hangs in galleries throughout the United States, as well as in Europe, Barcelona, and Italy.  He has also promoted and shown with members of the first nationally acclaimed African-American artist group of Philadelphia “Mixed-Media”.

He has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions and group exhibitions in the United States and abroad. His Philadelphia commissions include: WDAS FM (1996); Marco Solo, (published by J. Schwinn and G. Harlow, illustrated by Andrew Turner) Reverse Angle Productions, Inc. (I 995); and Robin Hood Dell, Fairmount Park (1985).

“My paintings combine the drama inherent in seventeenth century Dutch painting with the brush work and the economy of the Impressionists. However, I look to the jazz idiom more so than to other contemporary visual artists for guidance and inspiration. I tend to measure the success of my pieces by how they stand up technically, emotionally and innovatively to a Coltrane solo or whether I’ve captured the spirit of the occasion, a la Ellington. The subject matter, sometimes nostalgic recollections of my days as a young tough, covers a myriad of common folk activities. The setting usually my native Chester, is a beehive of creative stimulation or a deteriorating ghetto depending on my state of mind. At the very least, hopefully, these vignettes of experience will help to provide insight into some African American lifestyles and serve as an inspiration to my students and others to continue the legacy of African American participation in the arts.”

This self taught artist from Philadelphia has been well accepted in the art community in his first year. Expressing his acceptance in Christ and some political issues has taken many by surprise wondering what is to be expected in 2004.

When ask if he considered himself a spiritual or concept artist he replied, “I paint images which are a part of my everyday life. God, love, simply living trying to be the best I can at what ever I am trying to accomplish that day. I just love what I do and when I walk out into the world each day, there is so much to see, so much to paint. For tomorrow is not promised. So today I will say what I can, do as I must and paint what I can even if it’s just one stroke.”

        Eye Music by Gordon Parks

        Eye Music
        by Gordon Parks
        Limited Edition Signed & Numbered
Offset Lithograph Poster / Edition Size 150
        Size 24″ x 33″ Approx

Gordon Parks was one of the seminal figures of twentieth century photography. A humanitarian with a deep commitment to social justice, he left behind a body of work that documents many of the most important aspects of American culture from the early 1940s up until his death in 2006, with a focus on race relations, poverty, civil rights, and urban life. In addition, Parks was also a celebrated composer, author, and filmmaker who interacted with many of the most prominent people of his era – from politicians and artists to celebrities and athletes.

When the F.S.A. closed in 1943, Parks became a freelance photographer, balancing work for fashion magazines with his passion for documenting humanitarian issues. His 1948 photo essay on the life of a Harlem gang leader won him widespread acclaim and a position as the first African American staff photographer and writer for Life Magazine, then by far the most prominent photojournalist publication in the world. Parks would remain at Life for two decades, chronicling subjects related to racism and poverty, as well as taking memorable pictures of celebrities and politicians (including Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., and Stokely Carmichael). His most famous images, such as Emerging Man (1952) and American Gothic (1942) capture the essence of activism and humanitarianism in mid-twentieth century America and have become iconic images, defining their era for later generations. They also rallied support for the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement, for which Parks himself was a tireless advocate as well as a documentarian.

In no time, invested with a brilliant flow of creativity, his eye for and execution of colorful ‘tags’ and ‘R.I.P’ scenes began to bring him considerable ‘street recognition’ and local acclaim. But what soon pleased him more was his mounting reputation as a “B” boy–break-dancing, popping and locking with such skill and control that he became a regular on the dance crew of R & B star Sybil. After a couple of years traveling with her, he joined the touring crew of The Sugar Hill Gang, appeared on “Show Time At The Apollo”, performed on the video “Rap Mania”, and with the dance company of the movie, “New Jack City”.

Parks spent much of the last three decades of his life expanding his style; he continued working up until his death in 2006, winning numerous awards, including the National Medal of Arts in 1988, and over fifty honorary doctorates. He was also a noted composer and author, and in 1969, became the first African American to write and direct a Hollywood feature film based on his bestselling novel The Learning Tree. This was followed in 1971 by the hugely successful motion picture Shaft. The core of his accomplishment, however, remains his photography the scope, quality, and enduring national significance of which is reflected throughout the collection at The Gordon Parks Foundation.
