Pads to Palette by Ernie Barnes (Book)

      padstopalettebarnesOUT STOCK
      Pads to Palette
      by Ernie Barnes

      Hardcover Book
      96 Pages

Ernie Barnes was a very talented artist. He’s probably best known for his work featured on tv’s GOOD TIMES and Marvin Gaye’s album I WANT YOU. The book chronicles Barnes journey from football player to artist. He talks about life in the NFL as a player, a young African American and a survivor of the horrors that are the business of professional football. His sketches and paintings tell his story from the trenches to the gallery.

Ernie Barnes (1938-2009) is considered one of the leading African-American painters and is well-known for his unique style of elongation, energy and movement. He was also a former professional football player.

Barnes was born during the Jim Crow era in Durham, North Carolina. His father worked as a shipping clerk and his mother oversaw the household staff for a prominent local attorney. Even though they lived in the “the bottom” section of the city, their home was always well-maintained and the Barnes family emphasized the arts, education and strong faith.

As a young boy, on days he accompanied his mother to work, Barnes had the opportunity to peruse the art books and listen to the classical music in the attorney’s study. By the time Barnes entered elementary school, he was familiar with the works of master artists. A self-described chubby and unathletic child, Barnes was taunted and bullied by classmates. He continually sought refuge in his sketch books, away from the other students in the less-traveled parts of campus. One day he was discovered by a teacher hiding and drawing. This encounter would change Barnes forever. The teacher taught him exercise and bodybuilding, which improved his confidence and outlook on life. Moreover, it instilled in Barnes the discipline and dedication that would permeate his life. By his senior year in high school, Barnes became the captain of the football team and state champion in the shot put and discus throw.

He graduated with 26 athletic scholarships but because of segregation, was prevented from attending nearby Duke or the University of North Carolina. He chose North Carolina College (now North Carolina Central University) and majored in art. Barnes was drafted by the Baltimore Colts football team in 1959, and played five seasons as an offensive lineman for the San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos. In 1965, the New York Jets owner paid Barnes’ final season of football “to just paint.” A year later, Barnes debuted his art in a solo exhibition at a prestigious Manhattan gallery. The show sold out and he subsequently retired from football at the age of 28. His 1995 autobiography From Pads to Palette chronicles this career transition.

Barnes’ neo-Mannerist style of art has been admired and collected internationally. He has inspired countless artists and his images are always uplifting and humanistic. His critically-acclaimed exhibition The Beauty of the Ghetto traveled the country in the 1970s with hopeful and positive images. His famous Sugar Shack dance scene gained international recognition when it appeared on the television series “Good Times” and on a Marvin Gaye album.

He was appointed Official Sports Artist for the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics and also named “America’s Best Painter of Sports” by the American Sports Art Museum.

Barnes’ final public exhibition was in 2007 when the NFL and Time Warner sponsored a tribute to him in New York City. It was hosted by his former teammate, the Hon. Jack Kemp, Susan Taylor, Brig Owens and Donna Brazile. A traveling exhibition of his art titled Liberating Humanity From Within is being planned.

Gabe explains he had no choice but to become an artist. “From the time I was born I lived in an environment erupting with a multitude of artist and creativity.” After attending the High School for Creative and Performing Arts, he became a student at the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. There, in May of 2005, he received his certificate and won the award for the Best Figurative Painter in the Student Exhibition. In 2008 PAFA bought his painting, “Tioga Street” for their permanent collection. Since 1998, he has been a part of the Mural Arts Program where everyone in the city and especially the visitors can see and experience his inspiration on a grand scale. “It is important that my art resonate immediately with people, in their hearts and in their minds. For this reason, I will continue to paint for the rest of my life.” Moe Brooker, one of Philadelphia’s most recognized artists both nationally and internationally, says of Gabe. “His talent as an artist is far more mature than his years. He is young, yet he handles paint like a much older painter. His insight, visually, is beyond his years. I think you are going to hear a great deal from him in years to come.”  Written by Sande Webster.

Andrew Turner was born in l944 in Chester, Pennsylvania. He was a graduate of Temple University’s Tyler School of Art. Andrew’s work has been widely acclaimed, with many solo exhibitions and participation in group exhibitions. He has taught art in grades K-1 2 in the Chester, Pennsylvania Public Schools and in correctional centers. His appointments include Artist-in-Residence and Curator, Deshong Museum, Chester, PA; Lecturer, Widener University; Lecturer, Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA; and, he toured and lectured in The People’s Republic of China. Collections which hold Andrew’s paintings include Woody Allen, Dr. Maya Angelou, ARCO Chemical Company, Bell Telephone Company, Dr. Constance Clayton, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Cosby, Edie Huggins, Eric Lindros, Mr. and Mrs Louis Madonni, Moses Malone, Penn State University, the artist formerly known as Prince, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Sorgenti, Swarthmore College, Mrs. Marilyn Wheaton, and Widener University Deshong Museum, just to name a few. He has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions and group exhibitions in the United States and abroad. His Philadelphia commissions include: WDAS FM (1996); Marco Solo, (published by J. Schwinn and G. Harlow, illustrated by Andrew Turner) Reverse Angle Productions, Inc. (I 995); and Robin Hood Dell, Fairmount Park (1985).

“My paintings combine the drama inherent in seventeenth century Dutch painting with the brush work and the economy of the Impressionists. However, I look to the jazz idiom more so than to other contemporary visual artists for guidance and inspiration. I tend to measure the success of my pieces by how they stand up technically, emotionally and innovatively to a Coltrane solo or whether I’ve captured the spirit of the occasion, a la Ellington. The subject matter, sometimes nostalgic recollections of my days as a young tough, covers a myriad of common folk activities. The setting usually my native Chester, is a beehive of creative stimulation or a deteriorating ghetto depending on my state of mind. At the very least, hopefully, these vignettes of experience will help to provide insight into some African American lifestyles and serve as an inspiration to my students and others to continue the legacy of African American participation in the arts.”

                by Cbabi Bayoc
                Hand titled & Signed / Edition 1500
                Size 21″ x 27″ Approx

Cbabi (pronounced Kuh-bob-bi) Bayoc is an internationally-known visual artist and illustrator residing in St. Louis, Missouri. His subjects include family, children, music and a bunch of other cool stuff designed with line, bold color and phunk!

Bayoc, whose birth name is Clifford Miskell, Jr., adopted his name CBABI (Creative-Black-Artist-Battling- Ignorance) during his time at Grambling State University (‘92-‘95). In 1997, a legal name change took place at the time of his marriage. His wife assisted in deciding their last name BAYOC (Blessed-African-Youth-Of-Creativity) as something that could be shared with their future children.

After working as a caricature artist at Six Flags over St. Louis, Cbabi pursued a career as an illustrator. His first notable client was Rap Pages magazine. During the entire year of 1998 he was given the RPM section on a monthly basis to display a caricature of the featured artist. Through that exposure, he was contacted by Violator Management to create the artwork for the cover of the Violator Compilation, Vol.1 album, featuring the likenesses of Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott, Foxy Brown, Q-Tip, LL Cool J, Mobb Deep, Fat Joe and Big Pun.

The year before, Bayoc was approached to exhibit artwork at an organization called Dignity House in St. Louis, which was a beneficiary of musician Prince’s Love 4 One Another (L4OA) charity tour. The volunteer team recorded the food donation event on July 27, 1997 and took the footage back to Prince. The rest, as they say, is history. Prince liked what he saw and collected Bayoc’s art for many years. On October 20, 2000, the day Cbabi’s first child was born, Prince’s management called to request samples of new work. Prince used one of the pieces he acquired during that round, “Reine Keis Quintet”, as the cover art for his 23rd studio album, The Rainbow Children, which was released in 2001. The artwork was also the centerpiece of Prince’s first Celebration event held at his Paisley Park complex in Chanhassen, Minnesota, June 13-17, 2001, celebrating The Rainbow Children album and the re-claiming of Prince’s name after the expiration of his Warner Brothers contract.

In 2012, Bayoc began his 365 Days with Dad series. This New Year’s resolution to paint a positive image of black fatherhood each day for the entire year resulted in a journey that was inspiring (and exhausting!), ultimately resulting in the sharing of many stories of good experiences, no experience and hopeful experiences of Dads of all life stages. The project started a dialogue within the community about the importance of a strong foundation and support system for all children, no matter the age. You can check out the 365 Days with Dad series at www.cbabibayoc.com.

Over the years, Cbabi has had the pleasure of working with a variety of clients and families, all equally appreciated. Some notable clientele include Anheuser-Busch, Coca-Cola, New Line Cinema, St. Louis Post-Dispatch and MCA Records, to name a few.

Today, Cbabi spends his time working on a variety of projects, including portraits, community murals, school murals, children’s book illustrations and is always up for a new challenge. He likes traveling to schools and talking with students about their own power in determining their destiny, using his own life experiences as lessons. He also enjoys spending time embarrassing his three teenage children and supporting the Bayoc family-owned bakeshop and studio, SweetArt, located in the Shaw neighborhood of St. Louis City.
