Saturday Night by Gigi Boldon

Price: $275
Saturday Night
by Gigi Boldon
Limited Edition Signed and Numbered
Serigraph Edition 375
Size 23 1/2 ” x 22″ Approx

Gigi has been an artist from the moment she was able to hold a brush between her fingers. She studied at Columbus College of Art and Design and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan. In 1993, Gigi boldly left a lucrative career as a Graphic Designer to pursue her art on a full-time basis. As this decision left her facing divorce and single-parenthood one can imagine the obstacles she overcame but in her work one can still feel the positive essence of womanhood and the spirit of love.

Gigi’s art is inspired primarily by Romare Bearden, Benny Andrews, William Johnson, Jacob Lawrence, Charles McGee, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso. She prefers to work in acrylics and mixed media on paper, wood, or canvas, but is also adept at watercolor, collage, paper sculpture, stained glass, and airbrush.

Gigi is one of few artists who are able to work across a wide spectrum of cultural images, creating reflections of African-American people. Most evident in Gigi’s art and her personality is her passion. She has an attraction to nudes as subject, and she states, “…the human form is one of the most beautiful of God’s creations.” Gigi feels that the nude as expressed in fine art “…grabs us differently than in other manifestations such as film, music videos, and commercial advertising.”

She maintains her studio in Detroit, Michigan and works every day from mid afternoon until the early hours of the morning.

    Size 39″ x 27″ Paper / Image: 35″ x 21″

This self taught artist from Philadelphia has been well accepted in the art community in his first year. Expressing his acceptance in Christ and some political issues has taken many by surprise wondering what is to be expected in 2004.

When ask if he considered himself a spiritual or concept artist he replied, “I paint images which are a part of my everyday life. God, love, simply living trying to be the best I can at what ever I am trying to accomplish that day. I just love what I do and when I walk out into the world each day, there is so much to see, so much to paint. For tomorrow is not promised. So today I will say what I can, do as I must and paint what I can even if it’s just one stroke.”

The Lamp – (30th Ann. of Brown vs. Board of Education)
    by Romare Bearden
    Open Edition
    Size  21″ x 35″ Approx

Born in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1911, Romare Bearden, by the time of his death in 1988, had achieved a stature known by few artists during their lifetimes. He was, and still is, considered America’s greatest collagist and was thus honored by receiving the National Medal of Arts in 1987 from then President Reagan. The artist’s works are in the permanent collections of most every major American Museum including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Retrospectives of Bearden’s art have been organized by the Museum of Modern Art, the Mint Museum of Art, the Detroit Institute, the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Council for Creative Projects.
Throughout his life, Bearden depicted many rituals and social customs of twentieth century rural Black America. The images of spiritual ceremonies, baptisms and burial, industrial hardships, musical arrangements and daily life have become the themes that critics and collectors most frequently associate with his work. Visually and emotionally stimulating, Romare Bearden’s collages and prints are beautiful to behold and fantastic to contemplate.

“As a child I was encouraged to make pictures. My imagery comes from life experiences, from recollections of my past, stories my mother told, religious inspiration and my rich cultural heritage. For better or worse these aspects of my life have become the foundation of my art. The cultural inheritance brings a diverse richness to my art and provides me with an instinctive working process. I then translate these experiences and diversity into visual expression. My interest is not only in conveying to the viewer my personal feelings, but also our common humanity.

Over the past years I have painted with a flurry of excitement experimenting in all phases and styles of art. I have endeavored to express through my art, those things in life which represent who I am … my faith in God, pride in my race, and my love of beauty. As I continue to grow, my art will explore form, shape, color and texture”.

Samella Sanders Lewis is an African-American artist, and art historian. She works primarily as a printmaker and painter. She has been called the “Godmother of African American Art”. She received Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement from the College Art Association in 2021.

Artist and art historian Samella Lewis is renowned for her contributions to African American art and art history. Born on February 27, 1924, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Lewis’s heritage led her to view art as an essential expression of the community and its struggles.

Lewis began her art career as a student at Dillard University, where she was instructed by the African American sculptor Elizabeth Catlett. At one of her instructor’s suggestions, Lewis transferred to Hampton Institute, where she earned her B.A. degree in art history in 1945. Lewis completed her graduate studies at the Ohio State University, earning her M.A. degree in 1948, and in 1951 she became the first African American woman to receive her doctorate in fine arts and art history. In order to publish Black Artists on Art (1969), Lewis founded the first African American-owned art publishing house, Contemporary Crafts.

From 1969 to 1984, Lewis worked as professor of art history at Scripps College in Claremont, California, becoming the college’s first tenured African American professor. Lewis also helped to found the Museum of African American Art in Los Angeles in 1976 and established the scholarly journal International Review of African-American Art that same year. The journal went on to become one of the leading forum for educating scholars and others about the many contributions African Americans have made to the visual arts. Lewis published African American Art and Artists in 1978, a history of African American art since the colonial era. Through the museum and journal she founded, Lewis created exhibition opportunities for African American artists which have bolstered their credibility.

Lewis’ work was exhibited in many important galleries and museums. Lewis’s deeply-personal art embodies some experience from her own life in each piece. Lewis received several awards and distinctions; in 1995, she received the UNICEF Award for the Visual Arts, and from 1996 to 1997 worked as a distinguished scholar at the Getty Center for the History of Art and the Humanities in Los Angeles. Scripps College has also named an academic scholarship in Lewis’s honor.
