Thiago Almeida Santos (Thiago Bols) has a Bachelor in Fine Arts from the Federal University of Bahia and acts as producer, art director, make up artist and costume designer for shows in Salvador. His artistic vision is to help Brazilians connect more to these shows by transforming the faces of the artists to reflect the Bahian roots of the audience. Born in Salvador (BA), he follows the expressionist line with trends in contemporary and conceptual art. In October 2011, he presented his final higher education project to the 26th Annual Philadelphia International Art Expo, the state of Pennsylvania(USA). In 2012, he returns to Philadelphia (PA), USA, for the 27th Annual Philadelphia International Art Expo October Gallery. He was also invited to compose the Fair group exhibition of Contemporary Art of the Carrousel du Louvre by Ava Galleria at Museum Louvre in Paris (FR).
Simultaneously he exhibited in the Contemporary Art fair (2012) in New York, at the Jacob Javits Center. At the end of October 2012, Thiago participates in the Pink October charity auction with the “self-examination” screen, sponsored by Casa Cor Bahia, along with pieces by artists such as Ivete Sangalo, Carlinhos Brown and Cesar Romero, where his work had the third largest bid that evening. In December 2012, he worked in the organization, management and curation of the 2nd Edition of Mosaico Redivivo de História(s) da Educação This was a tribute to the Semana de Arte Moderna of 1922, conducted by PRODESE – Decolonization and Education programme / UNEB – University of the State of Bahia. In 2013 he was responsible for the art direction, costumes and make up of the show Raíz Brasileira , starring award winning musician Márcio Dhiniz. He also completed all the visual productions for the advertisement of the event which included producing DVD which were sold internationally. It became the prizewinner at the SESC Music festival. Between April and May of 2013 he participated in the movement Arte no Buteco, which linked with the gastronomic festival Comida di Buteco and exhibited the piece “Mulher Petisco”, resulting in an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Bahia. In November he was invited to design and produce the catalog Grife Donna Black in Salvador (BA). In September 2015 he was the only Brazilian who received an award from the Foundation Robinson in Portugal, who selected a total of nine foreign artists. These artists collaborated in a contemporize project (Re Habita 2015) in the town of Porto Alegre in Portugal, resulting in an exhibition that combined different forms of art. Every participant was required to demonstrate their skills in all of theses areas from painting to music or lighting. He is currently the official makeup artist of Olodum Queen Negra Jhô during carnival in Salvador

Luide Araújo was born and raised in the neighborhood of Candeal, Salvador. At the age of 20 he managed to secure work in a gallery owned by the family of the renowned artist, Carybé, where he became a devoted student. Luide has painted over 200 works and participated in seven exhibitions in areas as diverse as Bogotá, Columbia, and the ‘Museu do Ritmo’ and Grande Hotel da Barra in Salvador.

In continuing the exploration of his artistic talents Luide has developed a unique style blending personal life experiences with his vision of the environment in which he lives. His initial works clearly show the influence of his mentor, Carybé, especially in relation to their themes and the naive style. Luide’s bairro, Candeal, features regularly in his paintings where its most famous resident, the musician Carlinhos Brown, often makes a cameo appearance.

More recently Luide has been delving into his relationship with the afro-brazilian religion, Candomblé, producing works in the Yorubá tradition, reflecting the diverse personalities of the Orixás (Candomblé divinities) as well as the spirituality they bring to our daily lives. The motive for creating such art stems partly from reverence but also, for Luide, a personal exploration where the paintings serve to educate and indeed share something that Candomble gives to all of us – a sense of unity with mother nature. The message is that we need to be respectful, but at the same time we should enjoy the marvels omnipresent in the natural world.

In spite of the strong decorative quality of Luide’s work he manages to avoid the superficiality that often accompanies the decorative. His art is distinctive and shuns complexity, yet it remains profound in its simplicity, seducing us and inviting us to open up our imagination. Luide is at pains to point out that producing this work is not an easy process – it involves creating and recreating, pursuing the essence of the image he is attempting to convey.

Andrew Turner was born in l944 in Chester, Pennsylvania. He was a graduate of Temple University’s Tyler School of Art. Andrew’s work has been widely acclaimed, with many solo exhibitions and participation in group exhibitions. He has taught art in grades K-1 2 in the Chester, Pennsylvania Public Schools and in correctional centers. His appointments include Artist-in-Residence and Curator, Deshong Museum, Chester, PA; Lecturer, Widener University; Lecturer, Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA; and, he toured and lectured in The People’s Republic of China. Collections which hold Andrew’s paintings include Woody Allen, Dr. Maya Angelou, ARCO Chemical Company, Bell Telephone Company, Dr. Constance Clayton, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Cosby, Edie Huggins, Eric Lindros, Mr. and Mrs Louis Madonni, Moses Malone, Penn State University, the artist formerly known as Prince, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Sorgenti, Swarthmore College, Mrs. Marilyn Wheaton, and Widener University Deshong Museum, just to name a few. I tend to measure the success of my pieces by how they stand up technically, emotionally and innovatively to a Coltrane solo or whether I’ve captured the spirit of the occasion, a la Ellington. The subject matter, sometimes nostalgic recollections of my days as a young tough, covers a myriad of common folk activities. The setting usually my native Chester, is a beehive of creative stimulation or a deteriorating ghetto depending on my state of mind. At the very least, hopefully, these vignettes of experience will help to provide insight into some African American lifestyles and serve as an inspiration to my students and others to continue the legacy of African American participation in the arts.”

    Frank Frazier began his work as a fine artist early, at the age of seven. He was creating paintings in his family’s Harlem, New York City home. A husband and father of five, he recalls growing up, “we were not poor, but my family was a little different.” At the age of 15, his family moved to downtown New York City, which precipitated his “getting into a lot of trouble” as a youngster. A move to Queens, New York, brought with it a stint at a boys’ institution in upstate New York, but it also marked the point where Frazier turned his life around. While at the school, he was responsible for creating art for the “different bunks.” Teachers noticed his talent and later as a Sergeant in the Army during Vietnam, officers gave him the responsibility of painting art and shirts for the platoons. Frazier’s designs included a mixture of different scenes which he completed for free; he and his fellow soldiers weren’t thinking about money when they did their work. Amazingly, after his stint in the service, “I recall my family throwing lots of my art away.” Ironically, today it is the love and support of his immediate and “great extended family” that inspires him.

    This sculptor, painter, and collagist cites the Creator as his biggest influence. “The Creator inspires me. He puts whatever I need in me. He also admits that he “loves black women and likes to use them in his art.” Frazier also credits Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, and Elizabeth Cattlett as his biggest artistic inspirations. Speaking on how the Diaspora influences his art, Frank muses, “I go to Senegal, West Africa a lot. Many of my collages are influenced from there.” As far as the media he works with, the sky is the limit. “I paint with oils, watercolors, and charcoal, anything that’s available,” says Frazier.

    “When I see young people look with respect and appreciation for the art of today, I think of Sankofa, and how we must go back to the past to understand the present,” he observes. “Take Grant Hill, the famous basketball player. Young people heard Hill is exhibiting his art collection around the United States, and they want to be a part of it because of him, although it’s really the art he has collected they are coming to see! He is holding our heritage for our children.”

    Although the artistic creations of many blacks were not embraced by “mainstream” art dealers, always positive, Frank admits, “My experience as a black artist has always been good. I like working with black- owned galleries because they also expose us artists to other people’s creativity, old artists and new. Shows like this[BHAS] allow us to make a living off of our creativity, with our people supporting us. Charles Bibbs and Poncho [Brown] have come under criticism for mass-producing their work, but I think it’s great to bring an artist’s work into many homes.”

    Now living in Texas, Frazier is working on a series of paintings on the civil rights movement. He recently completed a road trip to various Southern cities that were pivotal to the struggle for equal rights; Jackson, Mississippi to Birmingham, Alabama, to Selma, to Tuskegee. This statesmen of art was “never motivated by money” when producing his art; the love of black history and culture and creation are his driving force. Frank Frazier serves up life’s wisdom as well as beautiful art; he offers this, “when life gets you down and you feel no one is helping you achieve your goals, remember this, even when somebody has their foot up your behind, you are still in front; You can still make it!”

    Edwin Lester is a self taught artist from Philadelphia who has taken the ethnic art world by storm. His spiritual concept is unique and Edwin Lester’s African-American art work will convey a message that is evident in every stroke.  Edwin Lester doesn’t necessarily consider himself a spiritual or concept artist, he has stated that he likes to  paint images which are a part of his everyday life. God, love, simply living trying to be the best he can at what ever he is trying to accomplish that day. Edwin Lester is a man that loves what he does and can simply reflect on the joy of life. “I just love what I do and when I walk out into the world each day, there is so much to see, so much to paint.
