Andrew Turner was born in 1944 in Chester, Pennsylvania. He was a graduate of Temple University’s Tyler School of Art. Andrew’s work has been widely acclaimed, with many solo exhibitions and participation in group exhibitions. He has taught art in grades K-1 2 in the Chester, Pennsylvania Public Schools and in correctional centers. His appointments include Artist-in-Residence and Curator, Deshong Museum, Chester, PA; Lecturer, Widener University; Lecturer, Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA; and, he toured and lectured in The People’s Republic of China. Collections which hold Andrew’s paintings include Woody Allen, Dr. Maya Angelou, ARCO Chemical Company, Bell Telephone Company, Dr. Constance Clayton, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Cosby, Edie Huggins, Eric Lindros, Mr. and Mrs Louis Madonni, Moses Malone, Penn State University, the artist formerly known as Prince, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Sorgenti, Swarthmore College, Mrs. Marilyn Wheaton, and Widener University Deshong Museum, just to name a few. He has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions and group exhibitions in the United States and abroad. His Philadelphia commissions include: WDAS FM (1996); Marco Solo, (published by J. Schwinn and G. Harlow, illustrated by Andrew Turner) Reverse Angle Productions, Inc. (I 995); and Robin Hood Dell, Fairmount Park (1985).

“My paintings combine the drama inherent in seventeenth century Dutch painting with the brush work and the economy of the Impressionists. However, I look to the jazz idiom more so than to other contemporary visual artists for guidance and inspiration. I tend to measure the success of my pieces by how they stand up technically, emotionally and innovatively to a Coltrane solo or whether I’ve captured the spirit of the occasion, a la Ellington. The subject matter, sometimes nostalgic recollections of my days as a young tough, covers a myriad of common folk activities. The setting usually my native Chester, is a beehive of creative stimulation or a deteriorating ghetto depending on my state of mind. At the very least, hopefully, these vignettes of experience will help to provide insight into some African American lifestyles and serve as an inspiration to my students and others to continue the legacy of African American participation in the arts.”

About the Artist:
MOORESTOWN-Cal Massey said that the wonderful images that appear on his canvases come to him during his daily meditations. He jots them on notecards and stores them in a filing cabinet that stands near the easel in his studio. “Everything in my work is spiritual,” the 80-year-old artist said. Entering the artist’s home/gallery studio on Dawson Street is almost a spiritual experience in itself. Messiah, a rendition of a black Christ as one with the earth, standing between the galaxies and the oceans, is the first painting a visitor notices. Near it hangs “Angel Heart”, which Massey considers one of his most popular works, inspired in part by the lack of black angels in traditional artwork. The angel’s hair, styled in a full Afro, is a tribute to the natural beauty of the black woman, Massey said. For years, Massey’s work has represented the black community in the art world. Now the artist, whose work already hangs on the walls of Congress members and rock stars, will see his work hang from the necks of Olympians. Massey was one of 13 artists from around the world chosen to design a commemorative medal for the 1996 ,Summer Olympics in Atlanta. His design, The High Jump, depicts a young black woman – her back arched slightly, her knees bent – as her thighs begin to top the bar. He said his is the only medal that features an athlete of color. “I’m proud to be a role model,” Massey said. The High Jump will be cast in sterling silver and run two inches in diameter. The medals will go on sale in late March or early April, and remain available until after the Games end.

This latter book continues to grow in value as a collector’s item and is currently being put into a CD version with music.

The music starts.  The artist, dressed fully in white, as the color of his canvas, begins to move, slowly at first; sensually.  He studies the canvas that is placed on the ground or propped up on an

easel; moves in and away from it, until he is propelled to make the first stroke—confidently—with a palette knife.  As he continues to channel inspiration from the percussion-infused music, the knife glides across the canvas, scrapes it in a seemingly spontaneous pattern.  Yet every stroke is full of intension and color.  He drips the paint directly out of a large container.  He wipes his fingers on the white overalls.  When the palette knife is surrendered and paint brushes take over the finer details, the supplies case may be used as a palette.  The wooden Egyptian symbol of eternal life—ankh—that hangs around the artist’s neck may fly off into a corner with a single gesture of his arm.  In the world of Austino ‘Obi’ Okafor’s creation, anything might happen and everything is play.

A Nigerian born and trained fine artist, Austino does not lack inspiration for his work.  He tells stories of his ancient culture and race with an equal amount of anguish and celebration; but his themes never lack a universal commonality.  After all, love and war, sex and spirituality will always have an audience; and Austino includes his own public in his favored style of creation:  the live painting performance that he calls “Difusion.”  His color palette is lush like the natural environs of his homeland (Austino was raised in Cameroon, Africa); and his never-expiring passion for life and God makes his every object arrestingly beautiful.

Austino’s works are widely collected nationally and internationally, and in the contemporary art world, he is considered a rising star.

Born in Chicago in 1918, Charles W. White is one of America’s most renowned and recognized African-American & Social Realist artists. Charles White worked primarily in black & white or sepia & white drawings, paintings, and lithographs. His artwork encompassed an incredibly skilled draftsmanship and artistic sensitivity and power that has reached and moved millions.

His meticulously executed drawings and paintings speak of and affirm the humanity and beauty of African American people and culture. Common subjects of his artwork included scenes depicting African-American history in the United States, socio-economic struggles, human relationships, and portraits.

Artist Charles White and his wife Frances Barrett moved to California in 1956, which was the beginning of White’s career as a Los Angeles artist. He had several shows in Los Angeles, and was represented by the Heritage Gallery. White received numerous honors and awards and has been exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, Whitney Museum, Metropolitan Museum, Smithsonian Institution, National Academy of Design, and elsewhere throughout the world. He was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1972. The Heritage Gallery had represented the artwork of Charles White from the early 1960s, when Mr. Horowitz provided Mr. White his first show in Los Angeles, California.

Luide Araújo was born and raised in the neighborhood of Candeal, Salvador. At the age of 20 he managed to secure work in a gallery owned by the family of the renowned artist, Carybé, where he became a devoted student. Luide has painted over 200 works and participated in seven exhibitions in areas as diverse as Bogotá, Columbia, and the ‘Museu do Ritmo’ and Grande Hotel da Barra in Salvador.

In continuing the exploration of his artistic talents Luide has developed a unique style blending personal life experiences with his vision of the environment in which he lives. His initial works clearly show the influence of his mentor, Carybé, especially in relation to their themes and the naive style. Luide’s bairro, Candeal, features regularly in his paintings where its most famous resident, the musician Carlinhos Brown, often makes a cameo appearance.

More recently Luide has been delving into his relationship with the afro-brazilian religion, Candomblé, producing works in the Yorubá tradition, reflecting the diverse personalities of the Orixás (Candomblé divinities) as well as the spirituality they bring to our daily lives. The motive for creating such art stems partly from reverence but also, for Luide, a personal exploration where the paintings serve to educate and indeed share something that Candomble gives to all of us – a sense of unity with mother nature. The message is that we need to be respectful, but at the same time we should enjoy the marvels omnipresent in the natural world.

In spite of the strong decorative quality of Luide’s work he manages to avoid the superficiality that often accompanies the decorative. His art is distinctive and shuns complexity, yet it remains profound in its simplicity, seducing us and inviting us to open up our imagination. Luide is at pains to point out that producing this work is not an easy process – it involves creating and recreating, pursuing the essence of the image he is attempting to convey.
