I am a self-taught artist reared by two cities rich in African American culture. I was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and raised in New York City.
My work is an extension of my roots & takes a critical view of social, political and cultural issues of the African American life. Though many of my subjects are depicted living out their daily routine, my focus is on the celebration of the human spirit, and the pursuit of the American dreams.
I am inspired, first and foremost by my experiences and what I see. But I am also moved by the images of the South depicted by Romare Bearden and Jacob Lawrence’s capture of the history and struggle of African Americans. It was after viewing Bearden’s work in 1987 that I began incorporating a three dimensional element which gave me the ability to create rawness and tension on a two dimensional medium.
Today I use a variety of materials to enhance the intensity of my artistic expression My most recent work, The Newspaper Series, features historical news print as its most dominant feature, and serves as a time capsule that details the perseverance and the intense, unwavering strength of African American people. Fusing the newspaper articles in to my work evokes an unexpected range of emotions.
My life is rewarded by creating art. The process takes me on an edifying voyage that is both healing and empowering. My work will always advocate unity & diversity, and my hope is that it also educates.

Michele’s art has been exhibited in museums and galleries in the USA. Her art is included in private art collections the Indiana State Museum, Tubman Museum and more. A native of Indianapolis, Indiana, the amazing story of Michele’s rise as an artist began with her graduation in 1991 from the American College for Applied Arts- last named American Intercontinental University in Atlanta, Georgia under Steve Steinman. In 1994, the Apex Museum awarded the artist with a grant that allowed her to embark upon a pilgrimage to Yoruba Land in Africa. She was mentored by the international acclaimed sculpture Lamidi Olande Fakaye. It gave Michele an appreciation for aesthetics and led to her first publication Going Back Home: An Artist Return to the South (1996), a book that
explores her family’s rural Southern heritage. Wood drew inspiration from her African heritage, Southern African-American roots, American quilts, African textiles and everyday experiences.

Born in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1911, Romare Bearden, by the time of his death in 1988, had achieved a stature known by few artists during their lifetimes. He was, and still is, considered America’s greatest collagist and was thus honored by receiving the National Medal of Arts in 1987 from then President Reagan. The artist’s works are in the permanent collections of most every major American Museum including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Retrospectives of Bearden’s art have been organized by the Museum of Modern Art, the Mint Museum of Art, the Detroit Institute, the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Council for Creative Projects.
Throughout his life, Bearden depicted many rituals and social customs of twentieth century rural Black America. The images of spiritual ceremonies, baptisms and burial, industrial hardships, musical arrangements and daily life have become the themes that critics and collectors most frequently associate with his work. Visually and emotionally stimulating, Romare Bearden’s collages and prints are beautiful to behold and fantastic to contemplate.
