Born in Brooklyn, New York, David J. Lawrence is a recipient of the prestigious “Creative Arts Award” of New York.  This renowned artist believes that “the sign of a genuine work of Art is that it can stir our unconscious feelings and past emotional experiences, while also inspiring self-awareness and cultural integrity”.

By virtue of this definition, David has blessed us with an enormous array of “genuine works of Arts”.  David is recognized as a major contributor to the art of the 20th century because of the brilliant manner in which he visualizes his objects and scenes.

David has had a life long ambition to be a professional artist. He has achieved this goal in such a manner that he has launched a national and international market for his originals and reproductions.

Talent, coupled with an academic journey to refine his gift, has resulted in David’s name being mentioned as one of the most influential artist of our time.  This quintessential American artist trained at the High School of Art and Design, and the prestigious Art Students League of New York, where fellow alumni include Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Norman Rockwell, and Georgia O’Keefe.  He also attended Long IslandUniversity, studying professional art and illustration.

He regards works done by legendary collagist, Romare Bearden, and European masters Pablo Picasso, Braque, andHenry Matisse that has helped to inspire the unique style used in his paintings.  David works in many mediums such as Airbrush, oils, and Acrylics that bring together a collage of techniques and integrating them into styles such as:  Abstract, Cubism, Figurative, and Futurism.  His recent series of works combines the Sciences of Astronomy, Numerology, Geometry, and Physics with the imagery, symbology, textures, and patterns of Indigenous cultures in his own unique style “Pyramidism”.

The context of the multicultural contemporary art created by Mr. Lawrence is based on spiritual and cultural motifs within the ancient cultures around the world.  To assist in this effort, David collects African Sculpture and other African artifacts.  The African artifacts he chooses are the tools and references, which reflect the art form, used in many of his dynamic paintings.  He states,“Utilizing historical African Art as a reference guide helps to enhance my knowledge of traditional art and gives me a better understanding of cultural history, which allows me to teach others through my paintings”.

David’s work hangs in galleries throughout the United States, as well as in Europe, Barcelona, and Italy.  He has also promoted and shown with members of the first nationally acclaimed African-American artist group of Philadelphia “Mixed-Media”.

The Reunion
by Frank Frazier

Original
Shoe Polish on Paper
Size 40″ x 26″ Approx

Frank Frazier began his work as a fine artist early, at the age of seven. He was creating paintings in his family’s Harlem, New York City home. A husband and father of five, he recalls growing up, “we were not poor, but my family was a little different.” At the age of 15, his family moved to downtown New York City, which precipitated his “getting into a lot of trouble” as a youngster. A move to Queens, New York, brought with it a stint at a boys’ institution in upstate New York, but it also marked the point where Frazier turned his life around. While at the school, he was responsible for creating art for the “different bunks.” Teachers noticed his talent and later as a Sergeant in the Army during Vietnam, officers gave him the responsibility of painting art and shirts for the platoons. Frazier’s designs included a mixture of different scenes which he completed for free; he and his fellow soldiers weren’t thinking about money when they did their work. Amazingly, after his stint in the service, “I recall my family throwing lots of my art away.” Ironically, today it is the love and support of his immediate and “great extended family” that inspires him.

This sculptor, painter, and collagist cites the Creator as his biggest influence. “The Creator inspires me. He puts whatever I need in me. He also admits that he “loves black women and likes to use them in his art.” Frazier also credits Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, and Elizabeth Cattlett as his biggest artistic inspirations. Speaking on how the Diaspora influences his art, Frank muses, “I go to Senegal, West Africa a lot. Many of my collages are influenced from there.” As far as the media he works with, the sky is the limit. “I paint with oils, watercolors, and charcoal, anything that’s available,” says Frazier.

“When I see young people look with respect and appreciation for the art of today, I think of Sankofa, and how we must go back to the past to understand the present,” he observes. “Take Grant Hill, the famous basketball player. Young people heard Hill is exhibiting his art collection around the United States, and they want to be a part of it because of him, although it’s really the art he has collected they are coming to see! He is holding our heritage for our children.”

Although the artistic creations of many blacks were not embraced by “mainstream” art dealers, always positive, Frank admits, “My experience as a black artist has always been good. I like working with black- owned galleries because they also expose us artists to other people’s creativity, old artists and new. Shows like this[BHAS] allow us to make a living off of our creativity, with our people supporting us. Charles Bibbs and Poncho [Brown] have come under criticism for mass-producing their work, but I think it’s great to bring an artist’s work into many homes.”

Now living in Texas, Frazier is working on a series of paintings on the civil rights movement. He recently completed a road trip to various Southern cities that were pivotal to the struggle for equal rights; Jackson, Mississippi to Birmingham, Alabama, to Selma, to Tuskegee. This statesmen of art was “never motivated by money” when producing his art; the love of black history and culture and creation are his driving force. Frank Frazier serves up life’s wisdom as well as beautiful art; he offers this, “when life gets you down and you feel no one is helping you achieve your goals, remember this, even when somebody has their foot up your behind, you are still in front; You can still make it!”

Numbering some 3.5 million, the Fang people inhabit Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, and speak variants of the Bantu language group. Fang society is strongly patrilineal and was known in previous years for hunting, waging war and even occasional cannibalism. They remain a powerful influence in their countries today.

      Gift by Luide Araújo

      SOLD
      Gift
      by Luide Araújo
Original Acrylic on Canvas – BRAZIL
      Size 31.5″ x 39″ Approx

Luide Araújo was born and raised in the neighborhood of Candeal, Salvador. At the age of 20 he managed to secure work in a gallery owned by the family of the renowned artist, Carybé, where he became a devoted student. Luide has painted over 200 works and participated in seven exhibitions in areas as diverse as Bogotá, Columbia, and the ‘Museu do Ritmo’ and Grande Hotel da Barra in Salvador.

In continuing the exploration of his artistic talents Luide has developed a unique style blending personal life experiences with his vision of the environment in which he lives. His initial works clearly show the influence of his mentor, Carybé, especially in relation to their themes and the naive style. Luide’s bairro, Candeal, features regularly in his paintings where its most famous resident, the musician Carlinhos Brown, often makes a cameo appearance.

More recently Luide has been delving into his relationship with the afro-brazilian religion, Candomblé, producing works in the Yorubá tradition, reflecting the diverse personalities of the Orixás (Candomblé divinities) as well as the spirituality they bring to our daily lives. The motive for creating such art stems partly from reverence but also, for Luide, a personal exploration where the paintings serve to educate and indeed share something that Candomble gives to all of us – a sense of unity with mother nature. The message is that we need to be respectful, but at the same time we should enjoy the marvels omnipresent in the natural world.

In spite of the strong decorative quality of Luide’s work he manages to avoid the superficiality that often accompanies the decorative. His art is distinctive and shuns complexity, yet it remains profound in its simplicity, seducing us and inviting us to open up our imagination. Luide is at pains to point out that producing this work is not an easy process – it involves creating and recreating, pursuing the essence of the image he is attempting to convey.

He has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions and group exhibitions in the United States and abroad. His Philadelphia commissions include: WDAS FM (1996); Marco Solo, (published by J. Schwinn and G. Harlow, illustrated by Andrew Turner) Reverse Angle Productions, Inc. (I 995); and Robin Hood Dell, Fairmount Park (1985).

“My paintings combine the drama inherent in seventeenth century Dutch painting with the brush work and the economy of the Impressionists. However, I look to the jazz idiom more so than to other contemporary visual artists for guidance and inspiration. I tend to measure the success of my pieces by how they stand up technically, emotionally and innovatively to a Coltrane solo or whether I’ve captured the spirit of the occasion, a la Ellington. The subject matter, sometimes nostalgic recollections of my days as a young tough, covers a myriad of common folk activities. The setting usually my native Chester, is a beehive of creative stimulation or a deteriorating ghetto depending on my state of mind. At the very least, hopefully, these vignettes of experience will help to provide insight into some African American lifestyles and serve as an inspiration to my students and others to continue the legacy of African American participation in the arts.”

        Signed and Numbered Giclee
        Edition 500
        Size 13″ x 19″  Approx

Ephrem Kouakou is one of the world’s foremost African painters. He currently resides in Baltimore, Maryland, and Ivory Coast, West Africa.

His powerful, vivid paintings are in the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum, New York, the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, Washington DC. and Fondo Del Sol Museum, Washington DC. He is noted for his bold blending of indigenous African visual sensibilities and folk motifs with Western creative techniques. Born in 1962 in the Ivory Coast village of Toumodi, Ephrem is a member of the Baoule group of the Akan people. As a young man he trained to be a medicine man, participating in many initiation rites. This actualized a deep spiritual life that manifests in his work. Themes of community, the spiritual power of masks, protective spirits, and animal guides, are reflections of an unseen world that brings a deeper meaning to our lives. When he was 17 years old, Ephrem walked over 2500 miles from his Ivory Coast village to Algeria, a journey which took over three months. He then made his way to France, where he studied at France’s best art academies, including L’Ecole des Beaux Arts, Angers (1981-1982), Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Aix-en Provence, (1982-1983) and École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris (1984-1986), where he graduated with honors. His works on both canvas and paper are noted for their highly saturated, intense color, achieved by mixing raw pigment powders into glue. Kouakou has exhibited in galleries and museums internationally including France, Belgium, Switzerland, and the United States. He is currently represented by Still Life Gallery in Ellicott City, MD.

Contemporary African art is currently undergoing a “quiet explosion”, with sales increasing worldwide in Europe, the USA, Asia, and Africa. An increasing number of art collectors are recognizing the quality, diversity, and opportunities for investment in the vibrant and powerful art created by African artists. More new museums dedicated to contemporary African art are opening their doors to the public, and existing collections in major museums are being expanded.
