As far as I can remember, I was always in the arts. In kindergarten, I would paint large designs on newspaper print with poster paint. At ten my mother brought me my first pad & water color box. I painted from sceneries to abstract to patterns, after that. Art supplies always became my choice. In 1989 I was accepted to OVERBROOK HIGHSCHOOL. (ART MAGNET PROGRAM) There I learned how to put designs in perspective with shades & colors. When& how to use cold and warm colors. I learned different mediums, pen/ink line, pencil shading, clay, oil-painting, acrylics, and how to build a canvass from scratch. My First art show was in 1991.My instructor LES KAMISON entered my Sr. oil painting project in the all city art show at the original convention center 39th spruce. Where I won 1st prize from KAPPA ALPHA PSI MEN OF BACA. Also a Sr. class (OVERBROOK ART MAGNET ART-SHOW) was Held at St. Joseph university city ave. Phila. Pa. After graduating in June. I attended BARBER SCOTIA COLLEGE CONCORD N.C. Where I studied art as a major. In 1993 my junior year, I held several art shows at the school, as well attending several festivals in Charlotte n.c. selling created original paintings. In 1995 I returned to Philadelphia. Young educated searching for a gallery to have art shows. I met Mercer Redcross C.E.O. of OCTOBER GALLERY was annually having the biggest art-shows on the east coast. ART-EXPO 1996-2005 At Temple University. Broad Cecil b. Moore.
I exhibited sold several pieces. Also at the expo the gallery would have art auctions hosted by Mercer himself. I sold created original oil paintings and mix media acrylics. After that exposure other galleries wanted and collaborated with me to have shows and sell my created pieces of art. (1997) SADIE WEBSTER 19TH WALNUT. (1998)- GALLERY- 911. 911 ARCH ST. PHILADELPHIA PA. (1998-2000) well fed art gallery 3rd n arch Olde city phila.pa. (1999-2007)/May-Aug./ every 1st of the month I attended 1st Fridays artist row in Olde city Phila pa. In 2007-2009 I toured to Venice beach California entered in the artist lottery and won several times and slots to exhibit and, sell my new works to art tourists from all over the world. I returned to Philadelphia in 2010 and set up a studio creating pieces every day and some commission projects in the music industry. In the near future there are plans to take a winter tour from PHILA.to N.Y. to Miami.
Thanks in your interest in reading my history to bring me to this vision to create handsome art out of blank wood or canvasses. My MOTTO AILLIA .Art is Love=Love is Art.

Pelourinho One
by Luide Araújo
Original Acrylic on Canvas Framed
Size 8″ x 8″

Luide Araújo was born and raised in the neighborhood of Candeal, Salvador. At the age of 20 he managed to secure work in a gallery owned by the family of the renowned artist, Carybé, where he became a devoted student. Luide has painted over 200 works and participated in seven exhibitions in areas as diverse as Bogotá, Columbia, and the ‘Museu do Ritmo’ and Grande Hotel da Barra in Salvador.

In continuing the exploration of his artistic talents Luide has developed a unique style blending personal life experiences with his vision of the environment in which he lives. His initial works clearly show the influence of his mentor, Carybé, especially in relation to their themes and the naive style. Luide’s bairro, Candeal, features regularly in his paintings where its most famous resident, the musician Carlinhos Brown, often makes a cameo appearance.

More recently Luide has been delving into his relationship with the afro-brazilian religion, Candomblé, producing works in the Yorubá tradition, reflecting the diverse personalities of the Orixás (Candomblé divinities) as well as the spirituality they bring to our daily lives. The motive for creating such art stems partly from reverence but also, for Luide, a personal exploration where the paintings serve to educate and indeed share something that Candomble gives to all of us – a sense of unity with mother nature. The message is that we need to be respectful, but at the same time we should enjoy the marvels omnipresent in the natural world.

In spite of the strong decorative quality of Luide’s work he manages to avoid the superficiality that often accompanies the decorative. His art is distinctive and shuns complexity, yet it remains profound in its simplicity, seducing us and inviting us to open up our imagination. Luide is at pains to point out that producing this work is not an easy process – it involves creating and recreating, pursuing the essence of the image he is attempting to convey.

Serigraph Signed and Numbered
Edition 199
Size 24″ x 50″ Approx

George Hunt was born in rural Lake Charles, LA in 1940 where he was reared by his single mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mr. Hunt advanced his formal education at the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff and later at NYU in the graduate program where he studied under Hale Woodruff, noted Harlem Renaissance artist.

In the 1960’s George started incorporating the cubism style of painting in his own style. His personal stamp in the style includes collage, vibrant colors and lively textures. As a youth George was personally connected to one of the most devastating periods in American history as he was one of the pallbearers assisting in putting Dr. King’s body on a plane for his return to Georgia to be laid to rest. In 1993 Mr. Hunt created a piece titled “I Am A Man” as a tribute to the sanitation worker’s strike. Today that piece hangs in the National Museum of Civil Rights and will forever be connected with the legacy of George Hunt.

“My paintings combine the drama inherent in seventeenth century Dutch painting with the brush work and the economy of the Impressionists. However, I look to the jazz idiom more so than to other contemporary visual artists for guidance and inspiration. I tend to measure the success of my pieces by how they stand up technically, emotionally and innovatively to a Coltrane solo or whether I’ve captured the spirit of the occasion, a la Ellington. The subject matter, sometimes nostalgic recollections of my days as a young tough, covers a myriad of common folk activities. The setting usually my native Chester, is a beehive of creative stimulation or a deteriorating ghetto depending on my state of mind. At the very least, hopefully, these vignettes of experience will help to provide insight into some African American lifestyles and serve as an inspiration to my students and others to continue the legacy of African American participation in the arts.”

SOLD – Dogan Woman by Kennard Copeland

      Dogan Woman
      by Kennard Copeland
      Handmade High Fire Clay Sculpture
      Size 26″h x 16″w Approx

A life in clay began nearly 30 years ago for Mr. Kennard Copeland, when he started producing art in Guyana, South America. Guyana’s terrain consists of sand and clay, so he began dipping his fingers in clay as a child. Although, his love affair with art really began after he was introduced to a local ceramic artist. He had asked her multiple times to teach him how to work with clay, but she was reluctant for fear that he would waste his new skill. After several attempts, she finally agreed to teach him and this was the beginning of his lifelong journey in ceramics. Soon afterwards, Kennard started a clay studio in Guyana in 1989, specializing in products for the Caribbean tourist market and the hospitality industry.

Since then, Kennard has worked as a consultant and a teacher in the Caribbean, South America and in North America, and he has facilitated workshops in Mexico and in France. Some noteworthy achievements include being commissioned by the staff of the former President of Guyana, Dr. Cheddi Jagan, to build his presidential office out of clay, as a birthday gift; being hired as a ceramic consultant by the government of Montserrat right after the volcano eruption in Montserrat, which helped residents deal with the traumatizing effects of the natural disaster; and being commissioned by The Marian Anderson Historical Society in Philadelphia, in the creation of a replica of the Marian Anderson residence.

Due to his impressive craftsmanship, Kennard was eventually sponsored by the Cordell Hull Foundation to enter the United States on an art cultural exchange program. In the United States, Kennard has taught at charter schools, for organizations, and for Prince George’s County, Parks and Recreation division; his focus has included clay preparation, hand building including coiling and pinching, throwing, mold making, large-scale pots, slip decoration, and glazing. Now, Kennard is the co-owner and full-time artist at Tiffanys Art Studio, which specializes in African art.

Thus far, Kennard’s work has been featured in the Caribbean, the hospitality industry, and in private collections worldwide, and Kennard has also been recognized as Prince George’s County as the “Artist of the Month.”  Creating art is a spiritual process for Kennard, as he says the clay tells him what he wants it to become. It has been this kind of inspiration that has lead him to produce truly magnificent, one-of-a-kind African pieces, all of which give a physical representation to traditional African culture, myths, and folklore.
