Although Geoffrey Holder was best known as a performing artist, he was also a visual artist. He first came to wide public notice as the dry-witted “Un-Cola Man” in Seven-Up commercials, and because of this he had a signature voice. While Holder shied away from being called a Renaissance man, his kaleidoscope of talents has allowed him artistic expression in dance, acting, writing, directing, photography, set design, sketching, and painting, he even published a Caribbean Cookbook. He first found encouragement to pursue painting in imitating his older brother, Boscoe, and the general theme of his drawings and paintings is the Caribbean. His choices of subjects, scale, and colours all reflect his native Trinidad.

Everything about Holder’s work suggests his native land. His subjects are blacks, portrayed with enough fluidity to suggest the Caribbean attitude of “no problem, mon.” In his coloured pencil work Man in Water (1985), for example, a man’s head rises out of rippling water. The man’s head is like an island, as is Trinidad. The piece offers a worrisome yet serene appearance. Holder’s still lifes are exotic, featuring plants with large flowers and unusual leaves.

As in the tropics, where the hot weather allows plants to grow far into maturity, Holder’s subjects take nearly all the space available. For the Broadway show The Wiz (1975), a black adaptation of the classic film The Wizard of Oz, Holder dressed most of the female cast members in large hoopskirts. His work netted Holder a 1975 Tony award for costume design. Later, after the award of a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship, he painted a thirty-foot mural on the Trinidad Hilton Hotel.

The tropical influence is also apparent in the vibrant colors of Holder’s works. The sun-drenched simplicity of his paintings offers an array of color harmonies common to his native land. Holder has achieved his lustrous palette by working through mediums to find those that allow him to control intensity. He has progressed from oil to using a combination of oil, wax, and grease-based coloured pencils and sticks.

Simple, yet full of personality, Holder invests a focused isolation in his art. As he does personally, his artistic forms need their own space. This is the feeling that underlies Holder’s art.

Mr. Stephens then furthered his yearning for the arts at Temple University Tyler School of the Arts, where he has achieved his BFA 96’; simultaneously completing a full term in the United States Marine Corps Reserve as a Communicator. Lately, he has displayed his work in various locations in the Delaware Valley area and Northern New Jersey Area. To add, the role of Artist/Instructor/Lecturer  has been carefully added to his list of creative skill; teaching in the area art centers of Southern NJ: Markiem Art Center, Perkins Art Center, Burlington County College Community Enrichment,  Art Teacher at Garfield Park Academy and several other locations throughout the New Jersey , Philadelphia area. Mr. Stephens’s unique expressive quality enables him to create in several modes of material manipulation from wet to dry but has a deep passion for charcoal drawing. Within his observations Donald has formulated his own visual syntax that has been described as expressive, informative and imaginative simply by maneuvering material and experiences to convey a certain moment in time and space.

Born in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1911, Romare Bearden, by the time of his death in 1988, had achieved a stature known by few artists during their lifetimes. He was, and still is, considered America’s greatest collagist and was thus honored by receiving the National Medal of Arts in 1987 from then President Reagan. The artist’s works are in the permanent collections of most every major American Museum including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Retrospectives of Bearden’s art have been organized by the Museum of Modern Art, the Mint Museum of Art, the Detroit Institute, the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Council for Creative Projects.
Throughout his life, Bearden depicted many rituals and social customs of twentieth century rural Black America. The images of spiritual ceremonies, baptisms and burial, industrial hardships, musical arrangements and daily life have become the themes that critics and collectors most frequently associate with his work. Visually and emotionally stimulating, Romare Bearden’s collages and prints are beautiful to behold and fantastic to contemplate.

    Jacob Lawrence (September 7, 1917 – June 9, 2000) was an African-American painter known for his portrayal of African-American life. Lawrence referred to his style as “dynamic cubism,” though by his own account the primary influence was not so much French art as the shapes and colors of Harlem.[1]

    Lawrence is among the best-known 20th-century African-American painters. He was 23 years old when he gained national recognition with his 60-panel Migration Series,[2] painted on cardboard. The series depicted the Great Migration of African Americans from the rural South to the urban North. A part of this series was featured in a 1941 issue of Fortune Magazine. The collection is now held by two museums. Lawrence’s works are in the permanent collections of numerous museums, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, the Phillips Collection, Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and Reynolda House Museum of American Art.
