    The Journey by Andrew Nichols

    Price: $125
    The Journey
    by Andrew Nichols
    Signed Giclee
    Size 24″ x 30″ Approx

Born in Brooklyn New York, Andrew discovered that he had a gift of drawing at an early age. He began expressing himself through pencil on paper in elementary school and soon began receiving formal Art awards, his first being at age nine. The signal was clear to those around him or to anyone who viewed his early work, that Andrew had a true talent. Andrew continued to win awards throughout junior and senior high school. His artworks remained displayed at Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn New York.

Andrew continued his education and art expression at Kingsboro Community College. It was during this time in his life that he developed a passion for oil on canvas.

Andrew began to tour the region selling his original oils. He was soon displaying his artworks at the Jacob Javits Center, Pratt Institute and one man shows. Andrew expresses positive African American images through his artworks. He projects his passion of the family as a strong loving unit.

Andrew often transfers his love for children to his canvas. He expresses life beginning on a canvas painting called “Welcome to the World”.

Nichols is best known for some of his latest artworks like “Goodnight” “Harmony”, “Sisters” and “Good Morning” just to name a few. When asked about a heart-felt moment, Andrew sites when several members of the New Jersey Nets purchased his oil originals as “defining” for him.

Andrew’s message tot he world community is, “We are all role models to each other in one way or another. Always be positive because somebody is looking up to you, known or unknown. Stay focused on your dream, do not be afraid to express your passion. Just as I transfer my feelings and inspiration to canvas, you are transferring your positive strength to others.”.

Connecting People With Art : African American Art by Evelyn and Mercer Redcross – SOFT COVER BOOK

Connecting People with Art by Evelyn and Mercer Redcross

      Price:  $545
      The Book Itself  Not Digital.

This book is currently out of print. We have only a few left.
      Soft cover only.

Book Description: 502 Page Coffee Table Art Book

This book is a written account of what October Gallery (OG) means to us. We attempted to unfold the saga of how OG evolved over time. In addition we queried patrons and artists alike: “What is the value of African American art to you?” Their personal responses, interesting and insightful, are included throughout our story. Both our national and international patrons and artists have witnessed (first hand) the creation and development of the African American art industry, which prior to the 1970s was almost non-existent. This group of patrons and artists are part of what we call BlackStream Renaissance”. Most African American artists market and exhibit in the African American community. Successful African American art festivals and expos, where artists sell and exhibit, recognize the importance of marketing to this special community. It is in this community where the strength and the value of African American art begins. It is this community that has provided the foundation for Blackstream Renaissance. It is this community that has given us the content, the material, the stories for Connecting People with Art. This book recognizes the pioneers of Blackstream Renaissance.

      Reviews

“The book is amazing,” said Walter Shannon, who owns The Famous E&S Gallery, 108 S. 10th St., with his wife, Cathy. “I think it does a great job of researching black art into the 21st century, and helps expose a lot of newer artists, and a lot of dealers who have made these artists successful. It gets into Alonzo Adams and William Tolliver and Paul Goodnight but also has Joshua Johnson, Romare Bearden and Jacob Lawrence.” –Courier Journal, Louisville, KY
      .
After reviewing this book, I am glad it was written, being a Philadelphia native, this book connects art collectors with artists, locally, nationally, and internationally. It is a must have book for any art collector. This book includes wonderful artists such as Larry “Poncho” Brown, Annie Lee, Jacob Lawrence and Romare Bearden to name a few. The book provides the reader with insight on various museums and dealers. There are celebrities who are artists and featured in this book. Wonderful photographs and stories about the people who buy art and artists who create it. R. J. Johnson

      About the Authors

Native Philadelphian Mercer Redcross, III co-founded the October Gallery with his wife, Evelyn, 28 years ago. The gallery s first location was in the Powelton Village section of Philadelphia. Today, October Gallery is located downtown in Olde City where it continues to promote African American art, artists and consumer education. The Redcrosses have always been collectors. Their initial interests included Lionel model trains, antique clocks and traditional art. Later, they became passionate advocates of African-American art. In 1985 this new fervor stirred a special kind of excitement for them. It led to the creation of a new art gallery in Philadelphia that they called, October Gallery. They understood that art is an ideal medium to communicate culture, history and broad human experiences. Together they strive to make art and art education accessible to all people. Connecting People with Art, has been their mantra for years. This book reveals their stories and numerous art adventures, as well as it chronicles the experiences of many others whom they met along the way.
      .
Mercer Redcross III graduated from Cheyney University with a BS in Economics. Then, he earned a Masters of Business Administration from Eastern University.
      .

          Sunday Morning
          by Raymond Doward
          Original Water Color on Paper
          Size 9″ x 12″ Approx

My name is Raymond Doward and I am primarily a self-taught artist who has been painting and drawing for over 15 years. My works of art can be found in the homes of hundreds of private collectors in the New York area and abroad. I have had numerous one man shows and I have learned through trial and error what the customer is looking for, because my customers satisfaction is what has been and continues to be what is important to me. A special and unforgetable moment in my career was recieving an art grant to paint a giant mural on a major building in my city with a small group of children ages 8-12. The name of the project was entitled ‘Children make the world go around’ the excitement on the childrens faces after seeing what they had helped to create is to me what art is really all about, people young and old expressing themselves through creativity! Art has been an important part of my life as a means of expression through the painting of objects in this vast earth and it’s beauty. I am a self-taught artist who has been studying and creating art for over thirty years, while becoming serious within the last 16 of those years. I am currently a National and International artist with my art in the homes and businesses of collectors all over the world. I paint loose and free with Palette knife while leaning more toward tight renderings with brush. The satisfaction and gratitude that comes as a result of finishing a painting and having someone willing to buy it cannot be expressed, but painting is a therapy that brings rest and relaxation as I enter into another world…the world of creativity!!!

Modern African sculpture is not “traditional”, although much of its subject matter has traditional roots. During the precolonial era, local inhabitants were already artistically predisposed, fashioning works from various natural materials such as fibres, wood, clay, and stone for functional, aesthetic, and ritual purposes. Numerous stone artefacts such as the Zimbabwe bird from the Great Zimbabwe state of the late Iron Age bear testament to this. Prior to the opening in 1957 of the Rhodes National Gallery in Salisbury, its first Director, Frank McEwen, met with Thomas Mukarobgwa, a young native steeped in rural knowledge and spirituality, and offered him an opportunity to pursue a career in art. Mukarobgwa became “the perfect mentor to guide the director of the new gallery into the ways and mores of the African people.” It was an introduction to local artist Joram Mariga and his early soft stone carvings that prompted McEwen to encourage early soapstone carvers to create works that reflected their culture. The Workshop School established by the gallery soon attracted more artists, many of whom had already been exposed to some form of art training from early mission schools and were established art practitioners. These included Joseph Ndandarika, John Takawira and Kingsley Sambo. The budding art movement was relatively slow to develop but was given massive impetus in 1966 by Tom Blomefield, a white South-African-born farmer of tobacco whose farm at Tengenenge near Guruve had extensive deposits of serpentine stone suitable for carving. A sculptor in stone himself, Blomefield wanted to diversify the use of his land and welcomed new sculptors onto it to form a community of working artists. This was in part because at that time there were international sanctions against Rhodesia’s white government, then led by Ian Smith, who had declared Unilateral Declaration of Independence in 1965, and tobacco was no longer able to generate sufficient income. Appropriately, Tengenenge means “The Beginning of the Beginning” — in this case of a significant new enterprise.
