by Luide Araújo – Brazilian
Original Acrylic on Canvas Framed
Size 8″ x 8″ Approx

Luide Araújo was born and raised in the neighborhood of Candeal, Salvador. At the age of 20 he managed to secure work in a gallery owned by the family of the renowned artist, Carybé, where he became a devoted student. Luide has painted over 200 works and participated in seven exhibitions in areas as diverse as Bogotá, Columbia, and the ‘Museu do Ritmo’ and Grande Hotel da Barra in Salvador.

In continuing the exploration of his artistic talents Luide has developed a unique style blending personal life experiences with his vision of the environment in which he lives. His initial works clearly show the influence of his mentor, Carybé, especially in relation to their themes and the naive style. Luide’s bairro, Candeal, features regularly in his paintings where its most famous resident, the musician Carlinhos Brown, often makes a cameo appearance.

More recently Luide has been delving into his relationship with the afro-brazilian religion, Candomblé, producing works in the Yorubá tradition, reflecting the diverse personalities of the Orixás (Candomblé divinities) as well as the spirituality they bring to our daily lives. The motive for creating such art stems partly from reverence but also, for Luide, a personal exploration where the paintings serve to educate and indeed share something that Candomble gives to all of us – a sense of unity with mother nature. The message is that we need to be respectful, but at the same time we should enjoy the marvels omnipresent in the natural world.

In spite of the strong decorative quality of Luide’s work he manages to avoid the superficiality that often accompanies the decorative. His art is distinctive and shuns complexity, yet it remains profound in its simplicity, seducing us and inviting us to open up our imagination. Luide is at pains to point out that producing this work is not an easy process – it involves creating and recreating, pursuing the essence of the image he is attempting to convey.

“My paintings combine the drama inherent in seventeenth century Dutch painting with the brush work and the economy of the Impressionists. However, I look to the jazz idiom more so than to other contemporary visual artists for guidance and inspiration. I tend to measure the success of my pieces by how they stand up technically, emotionally and innovatively to a Coltrane solo or whether I’ve captured the spirit of the occasion, a la Ellington. The subject matter, sometimes nostalgic recollections of my days as a young tough, covers a myriad of common folk activities. The setting usually my native Chester, is a beehive of creative stimulation or a deteriorating ghetto depending on my state of mind. At the very least, hopefully, these vignettes of experience will help to provide insight into some African American lifestyles and serve as an inspiration to my students and others to continue the legacy of African American participation in the arts.”

by Marcia Leivas – Brazilian
Original Acrylic on Canvas
Size 39″ x 31″ Approx

Journalist and artist, Márcia Leivas participates in group exhibitions with artists of a variety of trends since 2005. In 2008, she made her first solo exhibition, using as its theme the life of Benjamin de Oliveira (1870-1954), founder of the school of theater and circus (circo-teatro) and the first black Brazilian clown. This man of unique personality inspired the artist in creating playful works, which rescued the rich history of a multifaceted artist, but unfortunately already forgotten by the Brazilians.
In that same year she was invited to attend the 23rd International Expo in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (USA), which annually brings together artists from different parts of the world that have the African culture as a basis for their production.
In 2009, Marcia Leivas was invited back by the October Gallery, the organizer of the exhibition in Philadelphia and presents her second single exhibition, this time with a universal theme: peace. For this representation, she joined the symbology of Candomble, one of the most worshiped religions in Brazil, and the efforts of ordinary citizens interested in preserving the values of peace in their daily lives.
From this participation on, the artist starts a business relationship with this gallery, which is nowadays the official representative of their work in North America continent.
Marcia Leivas was born in Rio de Janeiro and is almost a self-taught person. She only had six months of classes at the School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage, a renowned private institution in Rio de Janeiro, which hosted great artists and intellectuals during 30 years of activities. At school, in 1989, she assimilates the basics and begins to give perspective, volume and light to her plastic expressions. In that year, she moved to Salvador, Bahia, where she lives up to now.
In 2001, she assumes a commitment to art and began attending workshops in drawing and painting at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM), and remains there for three years being guided by the teachers Paulo Pereira and Yuri Sacramento.
Since then, the artist has been producing her own exhibitions, participating in collective exhibitions and developing projects produced for teenagers from public schools and for community leaders as well. These works blend art, journalism and social discussion. Among the projects for 2011 is the publication of an art book with the history of the transgressions of the first black Brazilian clown, Benjamin de Oliveira.

Pacific Mysteries
by Albert Monferrato
Lithograph Signed and Numbered
Edition 300
Size 26″ x 37 ” Approx

Albert Monferrato was an oil painter and silkscreen printmaker who was born in Philadelphia. He attended the Philadelphia College of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Academia di Bella Arte in Florence, and the San Francisco Art Institute. Monferrato had his first one-man show when he was 24 at the Galleria Indiano in 1967. His work has also been exhibited at the London Gallery; Gallery Salon, Philadelphia; Elaine Horwitch Gallery, Santa Fe; Tyson Gallery, San Francisco; Nova I, Berkeley; and De Ligny Gallery, Fort Lauderdale. Until his death in 2006 Monferrato lived in Noe Valley, San Francisco and found much of the inspiration for his work in the natural beauty and geological diversity of the California landscape.

This beautiful silkscreen print depicts a truly unique and inventive scene. Beneath a deep blue sky a cresting wave borders a long stretch of road. Because both the wave and the road are rendered in the same shades of aquatic blue it seems that they are both in fact made of water, with only the white foam and the lane lines to differentiate the two. Rather than showing nature coming into conflict with a manmade structure, Monferrato has created a scene in which they are one and the same.

Angel Heart – B&W
by
 Cal Massey
Open Edition Print
Size 20″ x 24″ Approx

About the Artist:
MOORESTOWN-Cal Massey said that the wonderful images that appear on his canvases come to him during his daily meditations. He jots them on notecards and stores them in a filing cabinet that stands near the easel in his studio. “Everything in my work is spiritual,” the 80-year-old artist said. Entering the artist’s home/gallery studio on Dawson Street is almost a spiritual experience in itself. Messiah, a rendition of a black Christ as one with the earth, standing between the galaxies and the oceans, is the first painting a visitor notices. Near it hangs “Angel Heart”, which Massey considers one of his most popular works, inspired in part by the lack of black angels in traditional artwork. The angel’s hair, styled in a full Afro, is a tribute to the natural beauty of the black woman, Massey said. For years, Massey’s work has represented the black community in the art world. Now the artist, whose work already hangs on the walls of Congress members and rock stars, will see his work hang from the necks of Olympians. Massey was one of 13 artists from around the world chosen to design a commemorative medal for the 1996 ,Summer Olympics in Atlanta. His design, The High Jump, depicts a young black woman – her back arched slightly, her knees bent – as her thighs begin to top the bar. He said his is the only medal that features an athlete of color. “I’m proud to be a role model,” Massey said. The High Jump will be cast in sterling silver and run two inches in diameter. The medals will go on sale in late March or early April, and remain available until after the Games end.

African Mask – Yoruba
Size 10″ x 12.5″ Approx

The Yoruba people live in Nigeria and Benin (formerly the kingdom of Dahomey), and number nearly 24 million people. Beginning around 1000 AD, the Yoruba built a thriving network of cities and trading routes. Many of those cities survive today, and much of the original societal structure is preserved. Yoruba kings, known as “Oba”, are still considered sacred, and still live in palaces in the center of town, surrounded by the residences of their lesser chiefs. Echoes of the Yoruba can even be felt in the Americas in the form of Santeria. This religious tradition evolved in Cuba when the ritual practices of imported Yoruba slaves mixed with Christian theology of the new world. Santeria is still practiced today in many parts of the new world, and still retains it’s recognizable Yoruba origins.
