Vacationers have named six destinations where locals are notoriously ill-mannered, according to traveler accounts.
Traveling abroad can be an unforgettable experience, but not every destination leaves visitors feeling welcomed. While millions of tourists return from their trips with stories of kindness and hospitality, others say they have encountered curt interactions, impatient locals, and behavior they perceived as downright rude.
Of course, perceptions of rudeness can be subjective. Cultural differences, language barriers, overcrowding, and unfamiliar social customs can all influence how visitors interpret an interaction. Still, certain destinations repeatedly appear in online discussions and traveler accounts about places where tourists have felt less than welcome.
Here are some of the destinations travelers have singled out, according to a poll obtained by the New York Post on Sept. 13.
Italy is one of the world’s most beloved tourist destinations, drawing enormous crowds to cities and landmarks including Rome, Venice, Florence, and the Amalfi Coast. But that popularity can also come with a downside: some travelers say they have encountered locals who appear increasingly impatient with tourists.
“I’ve been surprised by how unwelcoming locals have seemed. Many interactions have felt curt or impatient, and a few people even gave my family dirty looks for seemingly no reason other than being American. It’s been disappointing, especially since I’ve traveled quite a bit and never felt this level of tension before,” one Redditor explained about their gripe with the country, famously nicknamed The Boot.
Others suggest that the sheer volume of tourists may be a major factor behind the perceived hostility.
“Bear in mind you’re visiting some of the most heavily touristed places in the entire world, so it may lead to some level of local jadedness towards tourists,” said one sage respondent.
The impact of mass tourism has become difficult to ignore. Viral footage from Italy’s most popular destinations has shown enormous crowds filling streets, creating human traffic jams, stopping to take photographs, and congregating in already-packed areas. For residents, the constant influx can make everyday life considerably more difficult.
Americans, meanwhile, appear to have a mixed reputation among some Italian folks, and let’s just say the outlook isn’t favorable. Inside the Reddit thread What Do Italians Think About Americans, native’s from the country described Americans as “rude,” “self-entitled,” and “difficult.”
One user said flat out:
“In my opinion American people are really egocentric and most of them don’t know anything about the rest of the world, they genuinely think, USA is the best country… like, WTF? Have you ever look[ed] outside your borders?”
Yikes!

Germany is another destination that frequently appears in online conversations about perceived rudeness toward tourists, with American visitors in particular sharing stories of abrupt interactions. Yet some travelers and commenters believe there is a cultural explanation for these experiences rather than a widespread dislike of tourists.
Germany has a reputation for direct communication and a relatively low emphasis on casual small talk, something that can come across differently to visitors accustomed to more conversational interactions.
But one native to the country claimed that the communication style can vary depending on where you are in the country.
“It really depends on where you live but in general: Germans are friendly but we draw a line between friends that we share intimate stuff with and strangers,” a Reddit user in the Why Do Germans Avoid Small Tall Even When They Seem Friendly Thread penned — and yes this is an actual thread.
In short: some German folks may need a little time to warm up and build trust before engaging in small talk.
What feels unfriendly to one traveler may therefore simply be a more reserved or direct communication style.
South Korea has also produced sharply divided reactions among international travelers. While many visitors praise the country’s food, cities, infrastructure, and culture, some say their interactions with locals have occasionally felt abrupt or unwelcoming.
The United States has its own destinations with reputations for blunt or unfriendly behavior, and New York City is perhaps the most famous example.
New Yorkers are often portrayed as impatient, direct, and unwilling to waste time on pleasantries. A Business Insider study found that 34.3 percent of people considered New Yorkers unfriendly, reinforcing a perception that has become part of the city’s global image.
Visitors frequently comment on the city’s famously fast-paced atmosphere may contribute to this perception, but this honestly depends on where you are and who your interacting with. As a native New Yorker, I can say were some of the warmest people in the world. Not too much on my city now!
Montenegro has become increasingly popular with international travelers, attracted by its Adriatic coastline, spectacular mountains, historic towns, and relatively small size. But some visitors say the country’s growing popularity has not always been accompanied by a warm welcome.
One Reddit traveler said they felt like they were “seen as a source of income” by locals.
“Everyday interactions were often very neutral or distant, even when we tried to be friendly. For example, one morning in Zabljak we had breakfast, left a small tip (just rounding the bill), and the very next day when we went to buy something, the same person who had served us did not acknowledge us, even though we were standing right there,” they wrote.
Still, experiences can vary considerably from one traveler to another. One user said they had an incredible time there, and while some locals may appear “cold” they found locals “to be really helpful and trustworthy. They don’t pretend to smile but if you need help they do much more than in many countries.”
Some of the tension may also be connected to the rapid growth of tourism and the changing relationship between residents and the increasingly large numbers of visitors arriving each year.
Paris has arguably been dealing with its reputation for tourist rudeness longer than almost any destination on this list. Stories of dismissive waiters, impatient locals, and difficult interactions have become so common that the stereotype has almost become part of the Paris travel experience.
But cultural etiquette may explain at least some of the friction.
Randi McQueen, a writer from the University of Notre Dame, argues that visitors should try to learn the language, and greet locals warmly – especially when asking for assistance.
“One of the best ways to immediately earn brownie points with the Parisians is to speak French. In restaurants, cafes, and boutiques, greet employees immediately upon entering. I have noticed many tourists entering coffee shops too distracted by the free wifi or their maps to notice the barista kindly welcoming them with a ‘Bonjour madame,’” McQueen explained.
Tourists who skip the greeting and immediately launch into a question may unintentionally come across as impolite and “lose respect by “not responding with an equally amicable ‘Bonjour.’”
“It is a simple way to get good service. Likewise, it is equally critical to leave a shop or restaurant with an ‘Au revoir’ or ‘Bonne journée’ meaning, Have a good day.”
Language can add another complication, particularly when visitors assume that everyone they encounter will speak English. Travelers also frequently report warmer interactions once they leave the most heavily congested tourist areas, where locals aren’t constantly navigating crowds or answering the same questions.
Ultimately, what one traveler experiences as rudeness may be interpreted by another as directness, cultural difference, or simple tourist fatigue. The destinations mentioned above attract millions of visitors precisely because there is so much to see and experience, and the sheer volume of tourism may itself be part of the reason some travelers leave feeling less than welcome.
