Let’s take a look at the Sun Ra Mural on the museum wall. To study a mural effectively, you must analyze its historical context, visual composition, and physical scale. Muralism differs from studio painting because the artwork interacts directly with public architecture and community identity.

Weather permitting we will examine and study this mural with a museum guide.
Here are some topics we will explore:

Identify the Basics: Note the title, artist(s), and year of completion.

Analyze the Subject Matter: What is literally happening in the image? Identify the main figures, objects, and symbols. 

Observe the Composition: Look at how the wall is used as a canvas. Notice the use of lines, color palettes, scale, and perspective. 

Determine the Context: Investigate the social, political, and historical background of the neighborhood or community where the mural is located. Murals often serve as visual storytelling to reflect a specific culture or shared history. 

Assess the Environment: Consider how the mural interacts with its surroundings. Think about lighting, nearby architecture, and how it makes the street feel.
