I am a self-taught artist reared by two cities rich in African American culture. I was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and raised in New York City.
My work is an extension of my roots & takes a critical view of social, political and cultural issues of the African American life. Though many of my subjects are depicted living out their daily routine, my focus is on the celebration of the human spirit, and the pursuit of the American dreams.
I am inspired, first and foremost by my experiences and what I see. But I am also moved by the images of the South depicted by Romare Bearden and Jacob Lawrence’s capture of the history and struggle of African Americans. It was after viewing Bearden’s work in 1987 that I began incorporating a three dimensional element which gave me the ability to create rawness and tension on a two dimensional medium.
Today I use a variety of materials to enhance the intensity of my artistic expression My most recent work, The Newspaper Series, features historical news print as its most dominant feature, and serves as a time capsule that details the perseverance and the intense, unwavering strength of African American people. Fusing the newspaper articles in to my work evokes an unexpected range of emotions.
My life is rewarded by creating art. The process takes me on an edifying voyage that is both healing and empowering. My work will always advocate unity & diversity, and my hope is that it also educates.

Edwin Lester is a self taught artist from Philadelphia who has taken the ethnic art world by storm. His spiritual concept is unique and Edwin Lester’s African-American art work will convey a message that is evident in every stroke. Edwin Lester doesn’t necessarily consider himself a spiritual or concept artist, he has stated that he likes to paint images which are a part of his everyday life. God, love, simply living trying to be the best he can at what ever he is trying to accomplish that day. Edwin Lester is a man that loves what he does and can simply reflect on the joy of life. “I just love what I do and when I walk out into the world each day, there is so much to see, so much to paint. For tomorrow is not promised. So today I will say what I can, do as I must and paint what I can even if it’s just one stroke.”

African Mask – Kwele Two
Size 12.5″ x 12.5″ Approx
The Kwele believe in witchcraft and blame all their personal and social ills on its influence. The Kwele protect themselves against the power of witchcraft with the ‘beete’ ritual.
The ‘beete’ is a ritual that involves purification by the spirits who are represented in the form of ‘ekuk’ masks. ‘Ekuk’ means the ‘spirits of the forest’ and the ‘children of the beete’. Kwele masks represent the antelope whose flesh was eaten at the end of the ‘beete’ ritual.
Kwele masks have two large horns which sometimes encircle and frame the face. Areas of the face are often painted with white kaolin clay, the color of the spirits. Kwele ‘ekuk’ masks are beautifully stylised with a heart shaped face, almond shaped eyes and a small or non-existent mouth.
