From his youth in a household regularly visited by Duke Ellington, Langston Hughes, and Fats Waller, Bearden made a name for himself in the art world in the 1940s, showing with Motherwell, Baziotes, and Jacob Lawrence; studied in postwar Paris; had a songwriting career in the 1950s; and turned almost exclusively to collage in the 1960s.
