“My paintings combine the drama inherent in seventeenth century Dutch painting with the brush work and the economy of the Impressionists. However, I look to the jazz idiom more so than to other contemporary visual artists for guidance and inspiration. I tend to measure the success of my pieces by how they stand up technically, emotionally and innovatively to a Coltrane solo or whether I’ve captured the spirit of the occasion, a la Ellington. The subject matter, sometimes nostalgic recollections of my days as a young tough, covers a myriad of common folk activities. The setting usually my native Chester, is a beehive of creative stimulation or a deteriorating ghetto depending on my state of mind. At the very least, hopefully, these vignettes of experience will help to provide insight into some African American lifestyles and serve as an inspiration to my students and others to continue the legacy of African American participation in the arts.”

Philadelphia Art Expo Fall 1988 Poster
Size: 24 ” x  18″

Charles White, Jr. was born on April 2, 1918 to Ethel Gary and Charles White Sr. on the South Side of Chicago. He discovered at an early age that he could draw. Often described as a Social Realist artist, White’s works is largely devoted to monumental prints and mural eloquently documenting the universality of humanity through the portrayal of Black America.
Coming home from school one day, White discovered students from The Art Institute of Chicago painting in a nearby park. One student explained how to mix paint and turpentine and stretch canvas. She also advised him that the class would be working there for a week. The next day after school, White raced there with an oil set his mother had previously bought him. Using a window blind as his canvas, he painted a landscape. Although initially angered by his destruction of the blind, his mother treasured this painting until her death in 1977.

Turn It Up
by Paul Goodnight

Philadelphia Art Expo 2003 Poster
Size 22 ” x 28″ Approx

Art has been Paul Goodnight’s saving grace in his recovery from his traumatic experience in Vietnam when he lost his ability to speak from seeing the horrors of war. Though some thought he had lost his mind, he knew he hadn’t and began to communicate with his drawings of the horrors of war. With the regaining of his voice he enrolled in Vesper George School of Art and eventually earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Massachusetts College of Art in 1976.

Goodnight has developed his own unique aesthetic philosophy to document the humanity of Black people around the world. He often incorporates African themes and symbols to provide depths of history and culture. He has traveled extensively, living among the people of Russia, China, Haiti, Nicaragua and Brazil. What he finds are the universal themes for his work seen through diverse cultural lenses.

Annie Lee was a Chief Clerk in the Engineering Department of a railroad. Today, Annie Lee is an internationally acclaimed artist and gallery owner known to art collectors the world over as “Annie Lee.”

As an adult, one Monday morning at five o’clock as Annie Lee tried to get it together, she came up with “Blue Monday.” She wondered if anybody else felt as bad as she did having to go out on that cold winter morning to catch the bus to work. Annie Lee is a humorist and a realist and her style has been referred to as “Black Americana.”

Annie Lee will tell you her secret to success is her faith in God and a willingness to help others. God did this through me. You have to have faith. I never thought I would leave the railroad, but it was the best thing I ever did. It was hard to leave the security, but you have to take a leap of faith.”

Germantown: An Art Gallery Beautifies a Culture

timthumb
Leroy Yancey, a contributor to the October Gallery enjoys painting people.

Added on January 28, 2014
“African-American art is good for everyone,” is the mission of Germantown’s October Gallery.

For 28 years, the art gallery has engaging people in art.

“It’s hard to say what we have exactly,” Monica Rocha, Gallery Manager of the October Gallery said. “We have pieces from Brazil, certain parts of Africa. We just have a lot.”

Rocha, originally from Brazil, is a resident of Germantown and has worked at the October Gallery for 12 years.

October Gallery sells an array of pieces from paintings to jewelry to sculptures, with prices ranging from $25 to $25000. The gallery compares itself to the Marriott Hotel chain in that it “[offers] an art experience that will fit anyone’s budget that does not have to break the bank.”

The gallery follows the legacy of the BlackStream Renaissance of the ’70s — a period in which African-American artists were prohibited from the art mainstream.

For 28 years to this day, every November the October Gallery hosts the Philadelphia International Art Expo, which is the largest African-American art expo.

Many artists who contribute to the gallery are proud to outwardly express their artistic voice and have a place to showcase their work.

“I met these guys from a friend of mine, and I’ve been contributing ever since,” artists Leroy Yancey said.

Leroy, a veteran, enjoyed creating art since he was a child. He noticed when returning from war, art was still in him

“Now, I have a place to put all of my artwork,” Yancey said. “This is just me, and I’m happy.”

Rocha, much like the gallery’s mission, believes art should be incorporated and seen in everyone’s day-to-day life, even if on a small scale.

“When I walk around Philadelphia now, it looks dead,” said Rocha about the coming of the winter season. “There’s no color, no life. I want to talk to the city and see if they can at least paint all of the windows of the houses with color.”
