Whether he’s throwing TDs, dropping sermons or doing some questionable math, Jameis Winston has spent his NFL career proving there’s nobody quite like him.
There are plenty of quarterbacks who can entertain you with what they do on the football field. Jameis Winston has somehow made sure the entertainment continues long after the final whistle. For more than a decade, the former No. 1 overall pick has built a reputation for being just as unpredictable with a microphone in his face as he is when he drops back to pass, mixing football clichés, Bible verses, motivational speeches and completely unexpected punchlines into something only Jameis could deliver.
That personality has been on full display again with the New York Giants, where Winston suddenly finds himself in a much bigger role. Jaxson Dart suffered a knee injury against the Los Angeles Rams that will keep him out for at least the remainder of the regular season, pushing Winston into the starting job. New York has since traded a 2027 fifth-round pick for former Vikings first-rounder J.J. McCarthy, but coach John Harbaugh has maintained that Winston remains the starter for now.
And naturally, Winston has handled all of that in the most Jameis way possible. After helping the Giants grind out a 12-7 win over Tennessee, he dedicated the victory to Dart before producing the instant-classic equation, “Twelve points. Six times two. It’s for you. That’s twelve.” In another interview, a question about how confident he was carrying the team forward sent Winston into a philosophical detour where he hilariously explained his thought process.
These are hardly isolated incidents. Winston has given football fans moments like these since his Florida State days, and whether he is intentionally being funny or simply letting his personality take over, the results are usually unforgettable. Here are some of the moments that explain why there is truly only one Jameis Winston.
There is no Jameis Winston list without this one. Before a 2017 Buccaneers-Saints game, Winston formed a “W” with his fingers, literally put them in his mouth and asked his teammates how many of them wanted to “eat a W” that night. Tampa Bay would end up losing 30-10, but the clip became so iconic that Winston has leaned into the joke for years afterward.
Long before every Winston speech became social media content, he was already experimenting with his own brand of motivational speaking. Before a preseason game against Jacksonville, Winston started rhyming about “pancake blocks and throwing dimes” before somehow bringing the whole thing home with a Tampa Bay battle cry. Watching Ryan Fitzpatrick’s reaction in the background makes the clip even better.
After throwing five touchdown passes in New Orleans’ 38-3 win over Green Bay in 2021, Winston tried to reveal the wisdom his trainer had given him before the game. There was only one issue: he completely forgot it in the middle of explaining it. After pausing to ask himself, “What did he say?” Winston finally settled on, “He just told us to be prepared.”
Winston’s first start for Cleveland in 2024 came with another passionate pregame speech, this time telling teammates to represent the names on their backs and the name on their helmets. Then he remembered he was playing for the Browns, whose famous orange helmets have no logo. “Well, we ain’t got no decal,” he corrected himself before continuing like nothing happened.
Winston can turn a pregame huddle into church, a motivational seminar and a rap lyric all within about 30 seconds. Before Cleveland upset Baltimore in October 2024, he preached about unwavering faith and reminded teammates that they only had one opportunity — a clear nod to Eminem’s “Lose Yourself.” Then he went out and threw for 334 yards and three touchdowns in a 29-24 win, making the speech sound a little more prophetic afterward.
Snow had Winston operating at peak form before Cleveland’s 2024 Thursday night win over Pittsburgh. Asked what it would take to beat the Steelers, he calmly responded, “The horse is preparing for battle, but victory comes from the Lord,” before talking about how excited he was that God had allowed him to play football in the snow. Somehow, coming from Winston, it all made perfect sense.
The fun did not stop after Cleveland won 24-19. Winston told Amazon’s postgame crew that his son had been eating snow earlier in the day and announced that he was “definitely going to eat some snow” himself before eventually joining the broadcast crew for snow angels and a full-blown snowball fight. It was less like a quarterback interview and more like somebody had dropped a kid from Alabama into his first snow day.
Only Winston could throw for 497 yards and four touchdowns, also throw three interceptions with two returned for touchdowns, lose 41-32 and then provide one of the most memorable postgame quotes of the season. After the loss to Denver, Winston said he knew he was better than what happened and added that he was “praying for the Lord to deliver me from pick-sixes.” The funniest part was that there was nothing performative about it — he appeared completely sincere.
